[아츠앤컬쳐] 토스카나는 뛰어난 장인 정신, 아름다운 중세 도시들, 그리고 시대를 초월한 아름다움으로 이름이 높다. 많은 여행객들이 유명 관광지로 몰려가곤 하지만, 숨은 보석 중 하나에 바로 피에트라산타와 인근의 해안 마을, 마리나 디 피에트라산타가 있다. 베르실리아의 ‘역사적 수도’인 피에트라산타는 놀라운 대리석 세공 기술과 활발한 예술 활동으로 “작은 아테네”라는 별명이 있다.

도시 자체가 진정한 야외 박물관으로, 이고르 미토라이의 “수태고지”와 “켄타우로스”, 페르난도 보테로의 “전사”와 같은 세계적인 작가들의 인상적인 조각작품들이 곳곳에 있다. 또한, 수많은 대리석 공방들이 일반에게 개방되어 있어, 예술적 전통이 깊은 이 마을에서 숙련된 장인들이 작업하는 과정을 직접 볼 수 있다.

지난 여름, 피에트라산타에서는 피에트라산타 명예 시민이자 세계적으로 주목받는 박은선 조각가의 ‘고통은 아름다움을 낳는다’특별전을 선보인 바 있다. 그의 조각 작품들은 고통과 재생이라는 주제로 두오모 광장의 ‘무한한 기둥’, 산타고스티노 성당의 ‘대리석 구’를 비롯하여, 강렬한 인상의 청동 조각, 회화, 드로잉 등이 도시 전역에 전시되었다. 이 전시는 박은선 작가의 작품에 담긴 감정과 철학을 엿볼 수 있는 기회였으며, 서로 멀리 떨어져 있고 이질적으로 여겨질 수 있는 문화들을 하나로 묶는 데 예술이 얼마나 강력한 힘을 발휘할 수 있는지를 보여주는 좋은 사례가 되었다.

하지만 예술은 피에트라산타와 마리나 디 피에트라산타가 가진 수많은 매력 중 일부에 지나지 않는다. 도심에서 조금만 이동하면 펼쳐지는 해안 지역에서는 아름다운 백사장에서 느긋하게 휴식을 취하거나 다채로운 해양 액티비티를 즐길 수 있다. 바닷가에서 여유로운 하루를 보내고 모험을 즐기며, 모든 여행자의 기대를 충족시킬 특별한 경험을 선사하고 있다.

피에트라산타를 방문한다면, 현지의 풍미를 만끽하지 않고는 완벽한 여행이라고 할 수 없다. 도시의 유서 깊은 거리를 거닐고 해변을 산책하면서 이 지역 특유의 다채로운 요리를 꼭 맛보기 바란다. 신선한 해산물이 듬뿍 들어간 카추코 알라 비아레지나(부드러운 생선 스튜)부터, 현지 조개류로 만든 스파게티 알라 트라바콜라라까지, 피에트라산타의 미식 문화는 해안 지역의 풍요로운 유산을 고스란히 담고 있다. 지역 명물인 프리뚜라 노스트라나 (해산물 튀김), 오징어 속을 채운 요리, 홍합 요리도 놓치면 안 된다. 이 요리들은 최고급 베르실리아산 올리브유로 조리되어 풍미가 더욱 깊다. 좀 더 풍성한 맛을 원한다면, 지역 특산품인 ‘토르타 디 페페 디 카마요레’와 ‘라르도 디 카마요레’를 맛보거나, 강렬한 풍미를 지닌 베르실리아산 페코리노 치즈를 고지대에서 생산한 달콤한 꿀과 함께 즐겨보자. 또한, 콩을 곁들인 ‘스판노키’ 요리는 매미를 닮은 현지 갑각류 스판노키와 붉은 숭어, 누에콩, 토마토, 바질 등을 넣어 만든 요리다. 여기에 유명한 피에트라산타산 스키아초네 콩을 추가할 수도 있다.

예술, 역사, 문화, 그리고 미식이 어우러진 피에트라산타는 모든 여행자에게 특별한 무언가를 선사하는 필수 여행지다. 예술 애호가든, 미식가든, 아니면 단순히 아름답고 평화로운 곳에서 휴식을 취하고 싶은 사람이든, 이 매력적인 도시는 탐험과 힐링을 위한 완벽한 장소가 될 것이다.

Pietrasanta and Marina di Pietrasanta

Tuscany is renowned for its rich craftsmanship, stunning medieval towns, and timeless beauty. While many visitors flock to its more famous destinations, one hidden gem that deserves attention is Pietrasanta, along with its neighboring coastal town, Marina di Pietrasanta. Often referred to as the "historical capital" of Versilia, Pietrasanta has earned the nickname "Piccola Atene" (Little Athens) for its remarkable legacy in marble craftsmanship and its vibrant art scene.

The town itself has transformed into a true open-air museum, featuring striking sculptures by world-renowned artists like Igor Mitoraj and Fernando Botero, including Mitoraj's Annunciazione and Il Centauro, and Botero's Il Guerriero. With numerous marble workshops open to the public, Pietrasanta offers visitors the chance to witness skilled artisans crafting masterpieces in a town steeped in artistic tradition.

Specifically, last summer, the town hosted a special exhibition that perfectly embodies Pietrasanta’s artistic soul. The celebrated South Korean artist Park Eun Sun, a recent honorary citizen of Pietrasanta, presented his powerful exhibition titled “Suffering Generates Beauty”. His sculptures, displayed across the town, explored themes of pain and renewal, with key pieces including his Infinite Columns in Piazza Duomo and marble spheres in the Church of Sant’Agostino, along with other striking bronze works, paintings, and drawings. The exhibition offered a glimpse into the emotions and philosophies behind Park’s creations and truly was an example of how powerful art can be in uniting cultures that would usually be considered so distant and different from each other.

But art is just one part of what Pietrasanta and Marina di Pietrasanta have to offer. Just a short distance from the town, the coastal area invites you to unwind on beautiful sandy beaches or dive into a range of exciting maritime activities. Whether you're looking for a relaxing day by the sea or a bit more adventure, the coast delivers something for every kind of traveler.

No visit to Pietrasanta would be complete without indulging in the local flavors. As you explore the town's historic streets and stroll along the shore, be sure to savor the region's culinary delights. From the rich, seafood-packed cacciucco alla viareggina (a milder fish stew) to spaghetti alla trabaccolara with local shellfish, Pietrasanta's cuisine is a celebration of its coastal heritage. Don't miss out on the famed frittura nostrana (fried fish), stuffed squid, or mussels, all prepared with the finest Versilian olive oil.  For a heartier experience, try local specialties like torta di pepe di Camaiore and lardo di Camaiore, or indulge in the region’s exquisite pecorino della Versilia, often paired with sweet honey from the highlands, as well as the spannocchi with beans, a dish featuring a local crustacean reminiscent of cicadas, paired with red mullet, fava beans, tomatoes, and basil, with the option to include the renowned schiaccione bean from Pietrasanta
