[아츠앤컬쳐] 롬바르디아 주의 중심부, 우뚝 솟은 알프스 산맥과 이탈리아 북부의 완만한 구릉 지대 사이에는 숨은 보석, 이세오 호수가 있다. 웅장한 산들에 둘러싸이고 수정처럼 맑은 이 호수에는 마치 시간이 멈춘 듯, 작은 섬들과 그림 같은 마을들이 점점이 자리하고 있다.

그중 가장 큰 섬 몬테 이솔라는 호숫가 마을 이세오에서 페리로 빠르게 연결되는 평화로운 안식처다. 페스키에라 마랄리오와 시비아노 같은 마을들은 자갈길과 알록달록한 집들로 예쁜 풍경을 자아낸다. 섬 꼭대기에는 수세기 동안 자리를 지켜온 성지, 산투아리오 델라 마돈나 델라 체리올라가 있으며, 호수 전체가 한 눈에 들어오는 탁 트인 전망을 감상할 수 있다. 곳곳에 올리브밭과 들판을 가로지르는 산책로는 하이킹과 자전거 타기에 완벽하며 자연 애호가에게 최고의 여행지다.

이세오와 로베레 같은 호숫가 마을들은 많은 문화적, 역사적 랜드마크들을 자랑한다. 가장 큰 마을인 이세오에는 아름다운 호숫가 산책로와 북적이는 카페, 우아한 부티크가 즐비하다. 중세 건축물과 로마 시대 유적으로 멋진 거리는 시간 여행을 하는 듯한 느낌을 준다. 로베레 마을의 야자수가 늘어선 호숫가 산책로는 비할 데 없이 아름다운 지중해 분위기를 자아낸다.

이세오 호수에서 가까운 도시 브레샤는 고대 역사와 아름다운 건축물들, 생동감 넘치는 문화가 매력이며, 이탈리아 통일에 중요한 역할을 하여 이른바 “이탈리아의 암사자”로 불린다. 브레샤의 구시가지는 로마 제국 시대부터 중세, 르네상스 시대의 보물들이 한자리에 모여 있는 살아 있는 박물관이다. 시내 한복판에는 카페와 다양한 가게들, 그리고 아름다운 팔라초 델라 로쟈로 둘러싸인 웅장한 르네상스식의 피아차 델라 로자가 있다. 주변 경관을 한눈에 내려다볼 수 있는 브레샤 성에는 도시의 군사 역사와 이탈리아 통일을 주제로 한 여러 박물관이 있다. 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정된 옛 수도원에 있는 산타 줄리아 박물관은 브레샤의 이탈리아 고대 및 중세 역사를 잘 보여준다.

이세오 호수와 브레샤 주변 지역은 아름다운 자연과 역사뿐 아니라, 풍부한 농업 전통을 반영한 음식 문화로도 유명하다. 브레샤는 산악 지형과 호숫가 환경에서 나오는 신선한 재료로 요리를 만든다. 이 지역을 대표하는 요리 중 스피에도 브레샤노는 돼지고기, 소고기, 닭고기, 때로는 토끼 고기를 꼬치에 꿰어 직화로 천천히 구워내어 보통 폴렌타와 함께 제공되며, 북부 이탈리아를 대표하는 메뉴다.

호숫가 삶의 정수를 보여주는 해산물 요리 미솔티니는 이세오 호수에서 잡은 정어리를 햇볕에 말려 만든 전통 요리로, 보통 크리미한 폴렌타를 곁들여 먹는다. 마지막으로, 현지 와인, 특히 호수 남쪽 프란차코르타 지역에서 전통 방식으로 만든 스파클링 와인 프란차코르타를 맛보지 않고는 여행이 완성되었다고 할 수 없을 것이다. “이탈리아의 샴페인”이라 불릴 정도로 명성이 높다.

고요한 아름다움을 간직한 몬테 이솔라에서부터 브레샤의 문화 유산, 그리고 지역의 정취가 가득 담긴 맛있는 현지 음식까지, 이세오 호수와 브레샤는 자연의 아름다움, 역사, 그리고 미식이 완벽하게 조화를 이룬 여행지로, 모든 여행자들이 꼭 한 번은 방문해야 할 곳이다.

Lago d’Iseo, Lombardia

Nestled in the heart of Lombardy, between the towering Alps and the rolling hills of northern Italy, lies Lake Iseo. With its crystal-clear waters surrounded by dramatic mountains, it is dotted with small islands and picturesque towns that seem frozen in time.

The largest of these, Monte Isola, is a true highlight. A short ferry ride from the lakeside town of Iseo, the island is a peaceful retreat where the rhythm of daily life is defined by nature. The villages of Peschiera Maraglio and Siviano greet visitors with cobbled streets and colorful houses, while at the summit stands Santuario della Madonna della Cerriola, a centuries-old sanctuary offering panoramic views of the lake. Trails weave through olive groves and fields, perfect for hiking and cycling, making this a destination beloved by nature lovers.

Lakeside villages like Iseo and Rovere boast cultural and historical landmarks. Iseo, the largest town, features a lakeside promenade, bustling cafes, and elegant boutiques. Its streets, adorned with medieval architecture and Roman ruins, offer a time-travel experience, while the palm-lined promenade of Rovere exudes a distinct Mediterranean atmosphere.

Brescia, a city near Lake Iseo, boasts ancient history, striking architecture, and vibrant culture. Its crucial role in the unification of Italy earned it the nickname “the Lioness of Italy.” Brescia's old town is a living museum, housing treasures from the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. At the heart of the city lies the magnificent Piazza della Loggia, a Renaissance square lined with cafes, shops, and the elegant Palazzo della Loggia.

Brescia Castle, with sweeping views of the landscape, contains museums dedicated to the city’s military history and the unification of Italy. The Santa Giulia Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site in a former monastery, presents an extraordinary collection of Roman and medieval artifacts, shedding light on Brescia’s important role in Italy’s past.

The area surrounding Lake Iseo and Brescia is renowned not only for its natural beauty and history but also for its culinary traditions. Brescia's cuisine draws on the freshest ingredients from its mountains and lakeside. One of its most iconic dishes, Spiedo Bresciano, is skewered, slow-cooked meat—pork, beef, chicken, and sometimes rabbit—usually served with polenta, a quintessential northern Italian staple. Another favorite is Missoltini, a traditional dish of sun-dried sardines from Lake Iseo, typically served with creamy polenta. Finally, no visit would be complete without sampling the local wines, particularly Franciacorta, the sparkling wine made using the traditional method that is Italy’s answer to Champagne.

From the tranquil beauty of Monte Isola to the cultural treasures of Brescia and the delicious, locally inspired dishes, Lake Iseo and Brescia promise a perfect blend of nature, history, and gastronomy, making them a must-visit destination for any traveler.
