[아츠앤컬쳐] 2017년 나의 첫 크로아티아 여행은 이스트리아반도 최남단에 있는 2,000년 역사의 로마 도시 풀라에서 시작되었다. 지금까지도 세계적 밴드 ‘스팅’이 장엄한 풀라 아레나에서 ‘Every Breath You Take’를 공연했을 때의 마법 같은 라이트쇼를 본 기억이 생생하다. 놀라운 음악적 경험이었을 뿐만 아니라 아직 완전히 발견되지 않은 로마제국의 영광스러운 역사를 상기시키는 숨겨진 보석처럼 예상치 못한 신선한 선물이었다.

풀라의 경기장은 원형이 그대로 보존된 몇 안 되는 경기장 중 하나로 세계적으로 유명한 오페라 가수부터 러시아 발레, 락앤롤 스타에 이르기까지 다양한 공연이 열리는 곳이며 또한 중, 동유럽에서 가장 유명한 영화제가 개최되는 곳이기도 하다. ‘로마 검투사’의 화려한 공연을 볼 때면, 관객은 지난 1세기로 돌아간 듯 인상적이고 멋진 인류 역사를 진관경으로 느낄 수 있다.

훌륭한 ‘스팅’의 공연을 본 다음 날, 풀라에 관한 나의 호기심이 한껏 발동하여 즐거운 맘으로 투어를 시작했다. 제1차 세계대전 중 풀라는 전략적으로 중요한 오스트리아-헝가리 제국의 주요 군사 항구였다. 풀라는 로마처럼 일곱 개의 언덕 위에 세워진 도시로 당시의 군사 전략가들은 풀라 언덕 아래에 복잡한 지하 터널 네트워크를 구축했다.

도시 중심부에 있는 언덕 중 하나에 17세기에 독특한 방어 구조로 지어진 웅장한 베네치아 요새(Kastel)는 이 고대도시에 수세기 동안 자유를 보장해 주었다. 나는 이 고대 요새 언덕 위에 설치된 현대식 엘리베이터를 타고 22m의 지하로 내려가 제로스트라세라고 불리는 비밀스러운 군사 네트워크를 살펴보았다.

카스텔 요새를 지은 건축가들이 이 멋진 보석의 심장부로 가는 길을 찾아냈다는 것을 알고는 또 다른 ‘스팅’의 유명한 노래 ‘Fortress Around Your Heart’를 연상했다. 한편, 풀라 해안의 아름다운 전경을 감상할 수 있는 이 언덕 위에는 인상적인 역사해양박물관이 있다. 고대 건물 양식과 현대적인 세련된 디자인 사이의 조화로운 건축적 이미지는 항상 나를 매료시키는 주요한 요인임엔 틀림이 없다.

풀라는 한국의 평택시와 자매도시로의 연결을 형성하고 있으며, 언제든지 한국인 방문객을 환영해왔다. 유명한 과학자이자 풀라 고등학교 교장을 역임하고 새로 임명된 풀라 시장 필립 조리치츠는 풀라를 스마트하고 깨끗하며 열린 도시로 소개한다. 또한 그의 사무실을 방문하면 명문 연세대학교에서 석사학위를 받은 완벽한 한국어를 구사하는 여성 보좌관을 만나볼 수 있을 것이다.

풀라 공항에서 한국행 비행기를 기다리던 중 우연히 ‘스팅’이 작곡한 또 다른 멋진 노래 ‘Let your soul be your pilot’가 귓가에 맴돌았다. 2017년 이후 내 영혼은 진정 나를 평화, 아름다움, 사랑을 찾을 수 있는 크로아티아로 안내하고 내 인생에 귀한 인연을열어 주고 있다.

2,000-year-old Roman city in the Istrian Peninsula Pula

When I first visited Croatia in 2017, I started my trip in Pula, a 2,000-year-old Roman city at the very South of the Istrian Peninsula. To this day, my memories of watching the magical lightshow as the band Sting performed “Every Breath You Take” in the majestic Pula Arena amphitheatre remain vivid in my mind. Not only was it an incredible musical experience, the unexpected introduction to the ongoing discoveries of the hidden gems of the Roman Empire allowed me to better appreciate their glorious history.

Pula’s arena is one of few well-preserved Roman arenas in the world, and now serves as a stage for all kinds of performances: from worldfamous operas and Russian ballets to rock & roll stars, as well as the most famous film festival in this part of Europe. The spectacular performances of “Roman gladiators” held in the arena allow spectators to feel as if they have been transported back through time and are partaking in this impressive, albeit gruesome part of human history.

The day after the show, I had a wonderful time sightseeing Pula. During the First World War, Pula was a strategically important, major Austro-Hungarian military port, so military strategists built a complex network of underground tunnels beneath Pula’s hills. Like Rome, Pula is a city built on seven hills. One of its hills, located in the very centre of the city, houses a magnificent 17th century Venetian fortress (Kastel), which safeguarded the city’s freedom for centuries. After climbing up to this ancient fortress, a modern elevator brought me 22 metres underground to the Zerostrasse, a secret complex network of military tunnels.

It reminded me of another famous Sting song: “Fortress Around Your Heart.” Meanwhile, the hill’s peak boasts an impressive History and Maritime Museum, with an astonishing panoramic view of Pula’s Bay.

I was once again captivated by the stunning architectural interaction between ancient history and sleek, modern design, which has fascinated me throughout my career. I am proud to announce that the city of Pula is in the process of becoming a sister city with the Korean city of Pyeongtaek. Pula has always been highly welcoming to Korean visitors and the new Mayor of Pula, a popular and skilled scientist and former dean of Pula’s high school, Mr Filip Zoricic, profiles his town as a smart, clean, and open city. What’s more, if you have a chance to visit his office, you will be amazed by the perfect Korean spoken by a young lady who received her MA from the prestigious Yonsei University.

While waiting to board my plane at Pula Airport for my flight back to Korea, coincidently, another wonderful song by Sting sang out from the speakers: “Let your soul be your pilot.” As I listened to the melody, I smiled, glad that my soul had brought me to Croatia, where I can easily find peace, beauty, and love.
