[아츠앤컬쳐] 내가 처음으로 아기자기한 구릉들이 넘실대는 크로아티아 북부 자고리예를 방문한 것은 지난 여름이었다. 친구들을 따라 언덕 꼭대기에 있는 아름다운 전통 목조 별장으로 갔을 때, 경사가 어우러진 곳곳에 포도밭이 녹색 언덕을 만들어내고 그 위에 수많은 녹색 음영이 겹겹이 쌓여 이루어진 광경을 내려다볼 수 있었다. 지는 해를 보며 테라스에 앉아 숙성된 와인을 마시고 자고리예 특산 치즈 페스트리인 슈트루클레를 즐겼다.

자고리예를 두 번째 방문했을 때는 한창 가을이 익을 때였다. 수평선을 향해 수십 개의 언덕을 가로질러 브라운, 오렌지, 붉고 금빛으로 물든 가을숲의 아름다운 정경에 나는 완전히 매료되었다. 고딕 양식, 바로크 양식의 교회가 정상을 지키고, 언덕의 완만한 경사면에 목재 빨간 지붕이 여기저기 자리잡은 작은 마을은 그저 동화속의 평화스런 한 장면 같았다. 우리는 지난번과 같은 테라스에 앉아 밤 굽는 냄새가 그윽한 곳에서 갓 만든 와인 모슈트를 마셨다.

크라피나시는 1183년 고대 역사 필사본에 본당으로 언급되었을 만큼 오래된 작은 마을이다. 1339년에 헝가리-크로아티아왕 지기스문트가 크라피나를 방문하여 도시의 시장을 자고리예 카운티의 대백작으로 명한 이후 크라피나시는 자고리예 지역 수도로서중요한 역할을 담당한다. 또한 이 지역에서 흥미롭게도 네안데르탈인의 유적이 발견되어, 첨단 네안데르탈인 박물관에서 125,000년 전 신비로운 유럽 조상들의 삶의 모습과 독특한 생활 방식을 관찰할 수 있다.

젤리코 콜라 크라피나 주지사와 조란 그레구로비치 시장은 이 지역을 크로아티아의 첨단 기술 중심 비즈니스 허브로 이끌며 한국과의 협력에도 열정적이다. 2019년 충청남도 고위대표단이 크로아티아를 방문하여 북부 3개 시와 협력 협약을 체결하고 공동 프로젝트 및 문화 교류가 지속되기를 기대하고 있다.

굽이굽이 구릉 속 크라피나에서 크로아티아인 친구들의 환대는 항상 감동적이고 기억에 남는 추억으로 머문다. 전 시장으로 인도주의자인 버스 회사 소유주 안툰 프레세츠키 씨는 어린 시절 꿈을 따라 멋진 빈티지 자동차와 오토바이박물관을 열만큼 열정적인 빈티지 자동차 애호가이다. 그의 포도원에서 생산된 와인을 즐기면서 그의 손님으로 크라피나에 머무는 것은 정말 큰 즐거움이었다. 프레세츠키씨는 깨끗한 새하얀 눈이 올망졸망한 언덕을 덮고 빨간 지붕, 교회 탑, 포도밭이 어우러져 또 다른 이미지를 만들어내는 겨울에 크라피나와 자고리예를 다시 방문할 것을 권유했다.

겹겹이 어우러진 언덕 위를 계절에 따라 아름다운 색상으로 변화시키는 자고리예를 철마다 방문하여 내 눈에 담아올 수 있다면 사계절 내내 크로아티아의 아름다움을 간직하고 싶은 내 욕심이 현실이 될지도 모르겠다.

The Interplay of seasonal Colors in the Picturesque Hills Zagorje

It was summer when I first visited the picturesque hilly area of Zagorje, in northern Croatia. My friends brought me to a beautiful traditional wooden cottage at the top of a hill, overlooking dozens of other sloping green hills carefully dressed in vineyards and a breathtaking interplay of numerous shades of green, layered on over the other. Just before dusk, we sat on the terrace, drinking a tasty wine, and enjoying zagorske štrukle – a scrumptious pastry stuffed with cheese, very typical for this area.

The next time I visited Zagorje, it was the height of autumn. I was captivated by the beautiful view of the browns, oranges, reds and golds painting the autumn forests, spreading across dozens of hills, towards the horizon. The red roofs of wooden houses dotted the gentle slopes of the hills, while gothic and baroque churches sat poised at their peaks. We sat at the same terrace, but this time with young, just-made wine (mošt) and the wonderful smell of roasted chestnuts.

City of Krapina is, like many Croatian small towns, very old, mentioned in an ancient historical manuscript as a parish in 1183. In 1339, Hungarian-Croatian King Sigismund visited Krapina, proclaiming the mayor of the city as the Great Count of Zagorje county. Since then, Krapina has had a significant role as the administrative, political and cultural capital of Hrvatsko Zagorje. But the rich history of Krapina goes even deeper into the past. Famous as an epochal discovery site of the remains of Neanderthal cave people.

In the unique, new and high-tech Neanderthal Museum in Krapina you can enjoy a hyper-realistic presentation of the lives of these mystical ancestors of European people, observing how they may have looked and how they used to live 125,000 years ago.

Mr. Željko Kolar, the Prefect of Krapina County, and Mayor Zoran Gregurović has successfully profiled this area as a high-tech oriented business hub of Croatia. They are also very passionate about encouraging cooperation with Korea. In 2019, the Chungcheongnam Province high delegation visited Croatia and signed an agreement of cooperation with three north Croatian counties.

The hospitality of my dear Croatian friends in this hilly small town of Krapina has always been touching and memorable. Mr. Antun Presečki, former city mayor, owner of one the main bus companies in Croatia, and a great humanitarian, has always been our generous host in Krapina, sharing with us his many fascinating stories.

Following his childhood dream, he opened a museum of vintage cars and motorcycles. But even as a passionate vintage car enthusiast, he is a dedicated advocate of the advancement of new and environmentfriendly technologies, as well as clean and renewable energy. It was truly an honor to stay in Krapina as his guest, enjoying an excellent wine produced from his own vineyard, provided exclusively to his house guests or as gifts to his numerous friends and business partners.

I have been advised to visit Krapina and Zagorje again in the winter, when pristine white snow blankets these magnificent hills, and when the red roofs, church towers and vineyards create yet another beautiful image of this memorable place. Maybe if we close our eyes to imagine this majestic scene, our yearning to marvel at the beauty of Croatia in all seasons will manifest into a reality.
