[아츠앤컬쳐] 크리스마스 즈음에 자그레브를 방문하는 것은 언제나 마법 같은 경험이다. 도시 전체는 아름다운 대림절 장식으로 반짝이고, 주요 공원의 나무들은 멋진 조명으로 꾸며지며, 축제 속 크리스마스 캐롤은 주요 광장에서 라이브로 들을 수 있다. 이로 인해 자그레브는 나를 마치 꿈같이 평화로운 세상으로, 또는 어린 시절의 향수를 불러일으키는 추억 속으로 인도하여 다시 함께하고 싶은 많은 사랑하는 사람들을 떠올리게 하곤 한다.

누군가가 자그레브에서 눈의 여왕을 만나고 싶냐고 묻는다면 당연히 농담으로 간주할 것이다. 매년 1월 초 자그레브의 메드베드니차 산(곰산)에서는 FIS 알파인스키 월드컵의 일부로 눈의 여왕 트로피를 쟁취하기 위한 대회를 개최한다. 수백 명의 세계 최고 스키어들이 스키 슬로프를 질주하고, 우승한 스키어들은 눈의 여왕과 눈의 왕이라는 칭호를 받으며 자그레브의 멋진 겨울 이야기에 또 하나의 마법 같은 스토리텔링을 이어간다.

대부분의 FIS 스키 월드컵이 외딴 지역에서 행해지는 반면 자그레브 행사는 도시의 중앙광장에서 버스로 단 30분 거리에서 행해지므로 주요 관광지의 중심에서 가까워 수만 명의 팬들과 방문객들이 메드베드니차산을 찾아 스키어들을 응원하고 그들과 함께 멋진 눈 쌓인 분위기를 즐기며 흥미로운 스포츠 및 엔터테인먼트 이벤트로 추억을 만든다.

자그레브 시민들은 운 좋게도 메드베드니차산 초입에 스키 리조트가 있어 4km 길이의 슬로프에서 스키와 스노보드를 즐길 수 있고 1,030m 슬로프 정상까지 운행하는 3개의 리프트도 있다. 또한 활강 스키보다 더 많은 모험과 다양성을 추구하는 사람들을 위해 크로아티아에 리카와 고르스키 코타르 산악 지역 깊숙한 곳에도 잘 관리된 스키 리조트가 있는데, 해안 도시인 리예카에서 불과 25km 떨어진 플라탁 스키 리조트로, 5.5km의 슬로프에서 스키와 스노보드를 즐길 수 있다.

1,100m에서 1,363m 사이의 고도에 위치한 플라탁에는 늘 겨울철에 많은 눈이 내린다. 크로아티아올림픽센터가 위치한 비엘로리시차는 자그레브 또는 리예카에서 차로 약 1시간 30분 거리에 있으며 고도 1,300m에서 시작하는 1.5km의 슬로프에서 아름다운 겨울 활강 스키를 즐길 수 있다.

크로아티아에서 높은 산들은 눈이 1m가 넘게 쌓여 산간벽지를 겨울 연가 같은 장면으로 탈바꿈시킨다. 2월이나 3월에 접어들면서 눈이 한껏 쌓인 겨울산과, 반면에 1~2시간 안에 해안가에서 이른 봄을 함께 경험한다는 것은 크로아티아에서만 느낄 수 있는 진정 매혹적인 경험이 아닐까 싶다.

겨울 쉼터에서 눈 덮인 스키 슬로프를 질주하고, 다음에는 아드리아해의 평화로운 파도에서 수영하는 자신을 상상해보라! 내 눈앞에 멋진 아드리아 연안이 펼쳐져 있고 등 뒤로는 긴 산맥의 눈 덮인 고산들이 병풍처럼 둘러져 있어서, 따뜻하게 느껴졌던 기온이 5km의 터널을 건너는 순간, 불과 5분 만에 10도 이상의 온도 변화를 일으켜 두 계절을 동시에 경험한다. 크로아티아를 여행할 때마다, 항상 이 작고 예상치 못한 발견에 귀한 선물을 받은 듯 많은 추억을 쌓게 된다. 우리에겐 아직 잘 알려지지 않은 크로아티아의 겨울 동화, 기회가 된다면 크로아티아가 제공하는 겨울 동화 속으로 뛰어들기를 권한다.

A Wintery Fairy Tale in Croatia

Visiting Zagreb near Christmastime has always been a magical experience: the city glitters with breathtakingly beautiful Advent decorations, the trees in all of the city’s main parks sparkle with majestic lights, and the festive Christmas carols are performed live in the major city squares. It is as if you are transported into some other, more magic and peaceful world, or into nostalgic childhood memories, reminding us of many loved ones we would like to be with again.

If anybody asks you whether you would like to meet the Snow Queen, it is probably safe to assume that they are asking it as a joke. Every year in early January, Zagreb’s Medvednica (Bear Mountain) hosts part of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup in a competition to earn the Snow Queen trophy. Hundreds of the world’s best skiers race down the ski slopes, and the winning skiers are crowned with the title of Snow Queen and Snow King – adding another magical fairy tale-like layer to the wonderful winter story of Zagreb.

While most other FIS Ski World Cup resorts are located in more remote areas, the event in Zagreb takes place just half an hour by bus above the city’s main square. Due to its close proximity to the centre of a major tourist destination, tens of thousands of fans and visitors come to Medvednica to cheer on the skiers and enjoy the wonderful, snowy atmosphere with them, creating an exciting and memorable sporting and entertainment event.

The citizens of Zagreb are fortunate to have a downhill ski resort at Medvednica Mountain with 4 km of slopes for skiing and snowboarding and 3 lifts available to carry them up 1,030 m to the tops of the slopes. However, for those seeking more adventure and variety than downhill skiing, Croatia also has a few wellmaintained ski resorts deeper in the mountainous areas of Lika and Gorski Kotar. Just 25 km from the coastal city of Rijeka is Platak, a ski resort offering 5.5 km of slopes, mainly for skiing and snowboarding.

Situated at an elevation between 1,100 and 1,363 m, Platak usually boasts an abundance of snow during the wintertime. Bjelolasica, the Croatian Olympic Center, is about a 1.5h drive from either Zagreb or Rijeka and offers a beautiful, wintery downhill skiing experience with a 1.5 km slope starting at an altitude of 1,300m.

The winter snow coverage on some of Croatia’s highest mountains can pile up to a height greater than one meter, turning the quite isolated areas into a scene like in the Winter Sonata. Towards February or March, a truly fascinating experience unique to Croatia is being able to experience both a deep snowy winter in the mountains as well as an early spring down by the coast within just an hour or two.

One moment you could be zipping down the snowy ski slopes at the winter rests, and the next, you can swim in the peaceful waves of the Adriatic Sea. A long range of high mountains divides the Adriatic coast from the mountainous hinterland, and just by crossing the 5 km tunnel, you can experience the vastly different seasons, with a temperature change of more than 10 degrees in just 5 minutes. Despite my many travels to Croatia, I always find myself pleasantly surprised by these small, unexpected discoveries. If you get the chance, I encourage you to jump into the winter fairy tale that Croatia offers – it is surely one of the best.
