[아츠앤컬쳐] 크로아티아는 전 세계 스포츠 경기에서 볼 수 있듯이 모두가 열정적인 스포츠 정신을 갖고 있다. 크로아티아인들은 프로 선수뿐만 아니라 스포츠 직업이 아닌 일반인들도 중년을 넘어서까지 여전히 활동적으로 스포츠를 즐긴다. 역대 크로아티아 대통령이나 총리들도 모두 스포츠에 적극적이며 직무를 수행하는 동안 스포츠 정신과 열정을 유지해왔다. 크로아티아의 이처럼 역동적이고 활동적인 정신은 인간이 아닌 다른 서식동물, 특히 돌고래에서도 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다.

크로아티아는 인기 있고 매력적인 관광지이지만 놀랍게도 돌고래 보호구역이라는 사실은 잘 알려져 있지 않은 듯하다. 400마리 이상의 큰 돌고래들이 말리 로시니섬 근처 수정처럼 맑은 아드리아해에서 평화롭고 행복하게 잠수하며 산다는 사실은 뜻밖의 이야기일 것이다. 지난 40년 동안 그들은 블루월드연구소 및 로시니해양교육센터에 기반을 둔 연구 그룹과 긴밀하게 협업하며 돌고래 연구를 발전시켜 왔다. 따라서 방문객들은 센터에서 이 아름다운 동물에 관해 많은 정보를 얻고 함께 수영하거나 다이빙을 하며 보호 지원을 위한 상징적인 활동으로 돌고래를 입양할 수도 있다.

1987년에 설립된 이래로 블루월드연구소는 돌고래와 다른 많은 멸종 위기에 처한 어류 종 보호를 우선시해 왔다. 크로아티아는 EU Natura 2000 프로그램의 일환으로 아드리아해에서 돌고래를 위한 6개의 해양보호지역을 선포했다. 아드리아해는 작고 생태계가 매우 취약하여 엄격한 환경보호체제가 필요한데, 크로아티아, 이탈리아 및 슬로베니아가 공동보호계획 및 규약으로 매우 긴밀하게 협력해야 한다.

크로아티아는 유럽에서 선제적으로 아름다운 자연보호구역과 서식지에 관하여 높은 수준의 법적 보호체제를 선언하였고, 최초의 국립공원이 선포된 1949년 이후로 많은법적 및 엄격한 자연보호 시스템을 점진적으로 도입하였다. 2022년 1월 1일부터 해양 생물에 위협적인 일회용 비닐봉투 및 기타 일회용 플라스틱 제품의 사용이 완전 금지되었음은 매우 고무적인 현상이다.

우리 모두가 알다시피, 진정한 자연보호는 항상 적절한 교육에서 시작된다. 로시니해양교육센터는 유치원에서 박사과정까지 모든 연령대를 위한 다양한 프로그램을 개발했으며 매년 350개 학교의 어린이와 10만 명이 넘는 관광객이 방문하고 있어, 해양환경에 대해 매우 실용적이고 기억에 남는 교육을 제공함으로써 환경 보호의 중요성을 가르친다. 일단 아이들이 보호된 환경에서 돌고래와 같이 놀고 돌보며 중요한 환경보호의식을 익히는 경험은 그들이 평생 동안 해양보호의 대사이자 환경 친화적인 삶의 옹호자가 되도록 할 것이다.

나의 방문 또한 돌고래를 보면서 많은 것을 배울 수 있는 기회를 가졌다. 이 놀라운 해양 포유류는 지능적인 문제 해결 능력이 있을 뿐 아니라 깊은 정서적 유대감을 갖고 복잡한 사회적 상호 작용을 할 수 있어 많은 감명을 주었다. 돌고래들의 조화로운 커뮤니티는 연민, 사랑 및 지원의 튼튼한 기반 위에 세워져 있다.

요즘, 사람들의 이익과 부를 좇는 개인주의 성향과 우려 속에 온순한 돌고래의 역동적인 공동체를 지켜보면서, 책임감 있고 서로 보살피는 공동체야말로 우리 자신과 이 행성의 다른 모든 생명체를 위한 더 건강하고 행복한 삶을 이루는 핵심이라는 사실을 다시 한번 깨달을 수 있었다.

Playful and Smart Dolphins of the Adriatic Sea

Croatia harbors a strong sporty spirit throughout the nation, as evident in performances in worldwide tournaments. Yet this sports enthusiasm extends far beyond the professional athletes’ circles, and many of my Croatian friends who have not pursued a sports profession are still quite active in sports into or even beyond their middle-aged years. Almost all Croatian Presidents or Prime Ministers were also active in sports and managed to maintain their sports mentality and zeal while performing their state duties. The nation’s playful and active spirit is even represented in its nonhuman residents, especially its dolphins.

Although Croatia is a widely popular and attractive tourist destination, surprisingly, its dolphin sanctuaries are not very well known. More than 400 bottlenose dolphins peacefully and happily dive through the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea near the island of Mali Losinj. Over the past 40 years, they have developed a very special relationship with the research group based in the Blue World Institute and the Losinj Marine Education Centre. Therefore, many visitors to this center can not only learn more about these beautiful animals, but also have the opportunity to swim or dive with them. You can even adopt a dolphin as a symbolic gesture to support the protection efforts.

Ever since its establishment in 1987, the Blue World Institute has prioritized the protection of dolphins as well as many other endangered sea species. As a part of the EU Natura 2000 program, Croatia declared six marine-protected areas in the Adriatic Sea for dolphins. The Adriatic Sea is small, and thus requires a very rigorous environment protection regime. As a closed sea with intensive traffic, the Adriatic has a very vulnerable ecosystem, requiring Croatia, Italy, and Slovenia to cooperate very closely in joint protection initiatives and regulations. Fortunately, Croatia has taken its responsibilities very seriously and was among the first European countries to proclaim very high-level legal protection regime of its beautiful natural reserves and habitats.

Many legal and rigorous nature protection systems have been gradually introduced since 1949, when the firsts national parks were proclaimed. Starting on 1 January 2022, single-use plastic bags and other single-use plastic products that present dangers to maritime life have been prohibited.

As we all know, the real protection of nature always starts with proper education. The Losinj Marine Education Centre has developed a multitude of special programs for all ages, from kindergarten to PhD levels, bringing children from 350 schools, and more than 100,000 visitors each year. By offering very practical and memorable ways to learn more about the marine environment, they widen the breadth of environment awareness and appreciation of its importance. Undoubtedly, once children are given the chance to personally play with dolphins and see them in their protected environment, their positive experiences will encourage them to become life-long ambassadors of maritime protection and advocates of an environmentally friendly life.

During my visit, I learned many things while watching the dolphins. These amazing marine mammals are not only capable of impressive and intelligent problem-solving, but are also able to develop deep emotional bonds and execute complex social interactions. Their harmonious communities are built upon a strong foundation of compassion, mutual love, and support.

At a time when it seems that people are becoming more individualistic, seeking personal gains and wealth, watching the playful community of the gentle dolphins served as a reminder that, in truth, a responsible and mutual-care community is at the core of building happier and healthier lives, for ourselves as well as all other lifeforms on this planet.
