[아츠앤컬쳐] 유럽 발트해 지역에 위치하고 있는 라트비아는 청정 발트해안과 전통으로 뛰어난 경관과 유구함을 자랑한다. 아름다움과 매력을 간직하고 있지만 덜 알려진 유럽 국가를 여행하고자 한다면 라트비아야말로 진정한 숨겨진 보석과도 같다.

라트비아 사람들에게 자신의 나라에서 가장 좋아하는 것이 무엇이냐고 물으면 자랑스럽게 큰 소리로 “물론 자연이죠!”라고 말할 것이다. 자연은 라트비아 축제 풍습과도 밀접하게 연관되어 있다.

6월에는 현지인들이 리구아(Līgo) 또는 야니(Jāņi)라고 부르는 독특한 하지 축제가 열린다. 6월 23일, 남녀노소 할 것 없이 모두 모여 춤과 노래, 만찬을 즐기고 모닥불 위를 뛰어넘으며 밤을 지새고 난 후 해돋이를 맞는 것은 버킷리스트에 올려야 할 귀중한 체험이다.

노래는 보통 내향적인 성향이라고 하는 라트비아 사람들을 나라 안팎에서 한데 불러 모아 단결하게 만드는 전통이다. 라트비아의 노래와 춤의 축전은 매 5년마다 개최되며 유네스코 ‘인류구전 및 무형유산’으로 등재되었다. 약 5만 명의 합창단과 민속 무용수를 비롯하여 수만 명의 청중이 축제를 즐기기 위해 모인다.

이 같은 행사 외에 라트비아 문화의 정수는 훨씬 더 흔한 일상에 있다. 즉, 수도 리가를 포함하여 라트비아 내의 관광지들과, 성, 박물관, 건축물 등의 매력이다. 발트해의 바다, 강, 호수 또는 연못에서 상쾌한 수영으로 하루를 시작하고, 지역에서 생산한 코티지 치즈와 신선한 야채 그리고 호밀빵으로 구성된 맛있는 아침 식사를 권한다. 그 후, 숲 속에서 풍부한 맛을 지닌 버섯을 따면서 휴식을 취하고, 신선한 숲 공기를 즐겨 보자.

라트비아의 시골에서 풍부한 모래 해변, 울창한 숲 그리고 축제, 수렵과 채집, 스키와 같은 야외 활동을 즐긴다면, 도시에서도 마찬가지다. 특히 수도 리가에는 활기찬 문화와 환상적인 요리, 아르누보 건축물과 중세 건축물들이 있다.

도시에서 하루를 마무리할 때, 현지인들과 섞여 힙한 펍과 명소에서 수제 맥주를 맛보며 즐거운 시간을 보내거나 위대한 문화유산을 지닌 라트비아 국립오페라발레단에서 세계적인 공연을 관람할 수 있는데, 리가는 마크 로스코, 미하일 바리시니코프, 세르게이 에이젠슈타인, 마리스 얀손스, 엘리나 가랑차와 같은 유명 예술인들의 출생지이다.

Latvia: A place worth traveling for

Latvia – a country in the Baltic region of Europe – may be small, but its pristine Baltic sea coastline and traditions tend to surpass even more iconic destinations of Europe. It has become a real hidden gem for travellers who strive to look Europe's lesser-known beauty and historical charm.

When asked what they love about their country the most, Latvians will proudly and loudly say: “Nature, of course!” Nature is what binds Latvian people with its deep roots in ancient celebratory traditions. Travellers who come to Latvia in June are privileged to witness a truly unique summer solstice celebration – Līgo or “Jāņi”, as the locals tend to call it. Traditions such as singing, dancing, feasting, and jumping over a bonfire are just some of the many activities that take place on the 23rd of June when Latvians of all ages gather to pull the ultimate all-nighter. Waiting for the sun to rise on the shortest summer night should absolutely be on your bucket list.

Singing is another local tradition that tends to unite the typically introverted Latvian people both at home and abroad. The Latvian Song and Dance Festival takes place every five years and is an official part of the UNESCO Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. It gathers around 50,000 choral singers, folk dancers and tens of thousands of viewers in the audience.

Whilst grand events and celebrations are a big part of Latvian culture, the soul of Latvian culture is much more commonplace. Whilst there are plenty of tourist spots, castles, museums, and architecture to be found in the capital Riga and beyond, it is the charm of everyday things that really embody the spirit of this small Baltic state. Start the day with a refreshing swim in the Baltic sea, a river, a lake, or a pond. Eat some delicious local breakfast – cottage cheese, rye bread with fresh vegetables. After that, it's time to go mushroom picking. While most mushrooms are surely delicious, it is also a way to relax, enjoy the fresh forest air.

Though the Latvian countryside provides a wealth of sandy beaches, lush forests and open-air activities like festivals, foraging, or skiing during the wintertime, there’s plenty to talk about in town, too. Latvian cities, especially Riga, offer plenty of options for those who enjoy slow walks through the city streets, lively cultural scenes, fantastic cuisine, iconic art-nouveau architecture and Medieval buildings in Old Riga. End your day in the city, tasting local craft beers and celebrating good times in one of the many hip pubs and culture spots with the locals. Or catch world-class performances at the Latvian National Opera and Ballet. Creativity and greatness run deep within Latvian culture, it is the birthplace of well-known people like Mark Rothko, Mikhail Barishnikov, Sergei Eisenstein, Mariss Jansons, Elina Garanca and many others.

Many visitors leave the country with the idea that Latvia may well be Europe's best-kept secret. Hidden adventures await those who are willing to wander off the well-beaten track, and Latvia has more than a handful of them to share. Within a single trip, you might be able to experience The quaint fishing villages of Kurzeme, the white sand beaches of Jurmala the blue lakes of Latgale, and of course, the lively cobbled streets of Riga. Welcome to one of the most intimate and unique countries in the world!
