[아츠앤컬쳐] 오스트리아에 거주하는 한인은 약 2,500명으로 추산된다. 오스트리아와 한국 간의 첫 접촉은 19세기 중반에 시작되었다.

1836년 슈바르첸베르크 왕자 요한 2세가 한국과 중국, 일본을 방문했다. 오스트리아 및 헝가리와의 공식적인 접촉은 1890년 9월 경비함 ‘즈리니’호가 제물포를 방문함으로써 이루어졌다. 1892년 6월 23일 도쿄에서 오스트리아-헝가리(뤼디거 프라이헤르 폰 비겔레벤 대표)와 한국 사이에 우호, 무역 및 항해에 관한 조약이 체결되었으며, 비준서(1893)는 어뢰 격침 순양함 ‘황제 엘리자벳’(함장 알로이스 리터 폰 베케르의 황실 선박)으로 한국에 전달했다.

1897년 요제프 바이어는 무용시 ‘한국의 신부’를 지었다. 1900년 6월 29일 이진범 참사가 한국인 최초로 비엔나에 부임했고, 이어서 1901년 1월 19일 민철훈 특별전권공사가 뒤를 이었다. 1902~1903년경 프란츠 요제프 1세가 한국군 전투복과 투구를 선물로 받아, 지금은 빈미술사박물관 의류관에 보관되어 있다.

당시 한국을 여행하는 사람은 에른스트 폰 헤세-바르텍, 루드비히 퓌르스트 비인디시-그라에츠, 한스 뵐러, 테오도어 폰 레르히 정도로 극히 드물었다. 1910~1945년 일본에 합병된 ‘새 아침의 나라’와의 접촉은 상표보호법, 철도건설, 해운규정과 같은 외교 정보에 국한되었다.

오스트리아에 대한 관심은 1960년대 독일연방공화국이 한국에서 간호사와 광부들을 외국인 근로자로 채용하면서부터 시작되었다. 이 무렵 한국인들은 다른 이주 노동자들에 비해 수준 높은 교육을 받았고 60% 이상이 고등학교를 졸업하거나 전문교육을 받은 상태였다. 1966년에는 많은 간호사들이 독일에 진출했다.

오스트리아의 한국에 대한 이러한 이미지는 오늘날까지 변함이 없다. 한국은 오스트리아에서 중요하고 신뢰할 수 있는 비즈니스 파트너로, 틈새 시장을 위한 첨단 기술과 문화 영향력이 있는 극동 지역의 나라로 간주되고 있다.

이러한 성공적인 관계를 바탕으로 한국 그룹은 오스트리아에 여러 기관을 진출시켰으며 그 중 다수가 문화 부문에 속한다. 2023년 10월 5일 빈음악협회 브람스홀에서 개최된 전주시립합창단 콘서트도 이런 경우인데, 서양음악뿐 아니라 한국음악도 선보여 관객들에게 큰 호응을 얻었다.

또는, 예술과 패션계에 돌풍을 일으키고 있는 한국 종이인 한지의 경우도 마찬가지다. 의류부터 미술품, 일상용품까지, 이 독특한 종이는 전통과 현대를 결합한 매체를 찾는 예술가와 디자이너들의 주목을 끌고 있다.

2022년 한국-오스트리아 수교 130주년을 맞아, 주오스트리아대한민국대사관은 신재현 대사 주재로 비엔나 트램 두 대를 타고 한국에 관한 홍보를 진행했다.

KOREAN IN AUSTRIA

The total number of Koreans living in Austria is estimated at around 2,500 people. The first contacts between Austria and Korea began in the middle of the 19th century. In 1836, Johann II, Prince of Schwarzenberg, visited China, Korea and Japan.

Official contacts with Austria and Hungary were established by a visit of the corvette "Zrinyi" to Chemulpo in September 1890. On June 23, 1892, a treaty of friendship, trade and navigation was concluded in Tokyo between Austria-Hungary (represented by Rüdiger Freiherr von Biegeleben) and Korea. The instrument of ratification (1893) was brought to Korea by the torpedo ramming cruiser "Empress Elisabeth" (imperial royal ship of the line captain Alois Ritter von Becker). In 1897 Josef Bayer composed the dance poem "The Bride of Korea". On June 29, 1900, Ambassador Tchine Pomm Yi became the first Korean to visit Vienna, followed by Min Chul Hun on January 19, 1901. Around 1902/1903, Franz Joseph I received a Korean war dress and helmet as a gift, which can be found in the clothing depot of the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

Travelers to Korea were rare (Ernst von Hesse-Wartegg, Ludwig Fürst Windisch-Graetz, Hans Böhler, Theodor von Lerch); contact with the "Land of Morning Freshness", which was annexed by Japan in 1910-1945, was limited to diplomatic information (trademark protection law, railway construction, shipping regulations).

It was not until the 1960s, when the Federal Republic of Germany recruited nurses and miners from South Korea as guest workers, that interest in Austria began.

South Koreans had a high level of education compared to other guest workers during this period. More than 60% had a high school diploma or tertiary education. Nurses arrived in large numbers in Germany in 1966.

This image of Korea has not changed to this day, Korea is considered an important and reliable business partner in Austria in the Far East and Austria as a high technology for niche markets and cultural influencers for Korea.

Based on these successful relationships, the Korean group has launched several institutions in Austria, many of them in the cultural scene, such as a concert of singers from Jeonju, which took place at the renowned Musikverein in Vienna on October 5, 2023 and presented not only Western music, but also Korean music pieces, which were very well received by the audience.

On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Austria in 2022, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Austria, under Ambassador SHIN Chae-Hyun, presented the country of Korea on two Viennese trams.
