525주년의 오스트리아 음악대사

[아츠앤컬쳐] 525년 전 창단된 이래 빈 소년 합창단은 오스트리아를 대표하는 합창단으로 성장했다. 소년 합창단에 대한 가장 오래된 기록은 1296년 호프부르크 궁정교회로 거슬러 올라간다.

1498년, 막시밀리안 1세 황제는 여러 곳에 흩어져 있던 궁정과 궁정 음악을 빈으로 옮겨 비엔나 궁정 음악대와 비엔나 소년 합창단의 토대를 마련했다. 막시밀리안 1세 황제는 빈의 궁정 음악에 있어 최소 6명의 소년들이 노래를 부르게 했는데, 이들은 무엇보다도 아름다운 전례를 담당해야 했기 때문이었다. 그 당시만 해도 이 합창단은 실제로 창단된 것이 아니었고 ‘빈 소년 합창단’이라고 부르지도 않았다.

군주제가 끝나고 조금 더 후에 1924년, ‘빈 소년 합창단’은 현재의 이름으로 협회로서 재창단되었다. 그 이후로 빈 소년 합창단은 오스트리아를 대표하는 브랜드이자 글로벌 기업, 오스트리아의 랜드마크가 되었다. 예를 들어 요제프와 미하엘 하이든, 지휘자 한스 리히터와 펠릭스 모틀, 소년 합창단으로서 첫 작품을 작곡한 프란츠 슈베르트 등이 있다. 오늘날에도 외교관, 성악가, 기업가, 지휘자 등이 자신들도 한때 소년 합창단이었음을 자랑스럽게 이야기한다.

합창단 교육을 살펴보면, 약 250명의 남학생과 여학생이 비엔나 중심부의 아름다운 팔레 아우가르텐에서 공부하고 생활한다. 그 중 약 100명이 4개의 콘서트 합창단 중 한 곳에서 노래를 부른다. 이들은 주에 3일 2시간씩 리허설을 하고, 개별 목소리 트레이닝과 오디션을 받는다. 한 학년은 3학기로 나뉘는데, 두 학기 동안은 공부하고 한 학기는 투어를 한다. 소년들의 레퍼토리는 트리치-트라치-폴카, 들장미, 크리스마스 캐롤로만 구성된 것이 아니다. 예를 들어 2001년에는 피에르 불레즈와 함께 말러의 교향곡 3번을 녹음하여 상을 받은 바 있다.

빈 소년 합창단의 트레이드마크는 세일러 슈트다. 빈 소년 합창단이 새로 창단된 1920년대에는 자신의 아이에게 그런 정장을 입히는 것이 좋은 예절로 여겨졌다. 소년 합창단의 경우 1913년 모델의 역사적인 영국 생도 제복을 입은 모습을 가끔 볼 수는 있지만, 이는 오늘날까지도 변하지 않았다.

2004년에는 처음으로 여학생들이 입학하여 ‘비엔나 소녀 합창단’이 창단되었다. 10명의 단원으로 시작한 합창단은 이제 9세에서 15세 사이의 25명의 헌신적인 소녀들로 구성된 실내 합창단으로 성장했다. 소녀 합창단원들은 빈 소년 합창단의 방식으로 교육을 받는다. 2018년 빈 호프부르크에서 열린 기후 정상회의나 2023년 빈 필하모닉의 신년 음악회와 같은 특별한 프로젝트에서 소년 단원들과 함께 노래하는 모습을 자주 볼 수 있다. 2024/25 학년도부터 합창단 소녀들은 빈 소년 합창단 공립학교에 입학하여 음악 교육을 강화하고 국내외 콘서트 투어에 참가할 수 있다.

The Singing Ambassadors of Austria - An institution turns 525 years

Since its founding more than 525 years ago, the Vienna Boys' Choir has developed into Austria's figurehead. The oldest reference to a boys' choir in the Hofburg Chapel dates back to 1296.

In 1498, more than half a millennium ago, Emperor Maximilian I moved his court and court music from various residences to Vienna. In doing so, he laid the foundation for the Vienna Court Music Band and eventually also for the Vienna Boys' Choir.

In 1498, it wasn't really a foundation. And the boys weren't called the "Vienna Boys' Choir" back then. When Emperor Maximilian I moved his court from Innsbruck to Vienna, he decreed that from then on at least six boys should sing in his court music, who had to take care of one thing above all: a beautiful liturgy.

Until the end of the monarchy and even a little longer. In 1924, the "Vienna Boys' Choir" was re-founded as an association under its current name. Since then, they have been a brand name, a global company, a landmark of Austria. Josef and Michael Haydn, for example, the conductors Hans Richter and Felix Mottl as well as Franz Schubert, who composed his first works as a choirboy. Even today, diplomats, castle actors, entrepreneurs and conductors proudly point out that they, too, were once the Boys' Choir.

ONE TRIMESTER THEY ARE ON TOUR

Approximately 250 boys and girls study and live in the beautiful Palais Augarten in the heart of Vienna. About 100 of them sing in one of the four concert choirs. They have two hours of rehearsal three days a week, plus individual voice training and audition appointments. Their school year is divided into trimesters: they study for two trimesters and tour for one trimester. The boys' repertoire consists not only of Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka, Heideröslein and Christmas carols. In 2001, for example, they recorded Mahler's Symphony No. 3 with Pierre Boulez, which won an award.

SAILOR SUIT AS A TRADEMARK

In the 1920s, when the Vienna Boys' Choir was newly founded, it was considered good manners to put one's sons in such suits. In the case of the Boys' Choir, this has not changed to this day, although they can now and then be seen in the historic k.u.k. cadet uniform, following the model of 1913, only without sabres.

In 2004, girls were admitted for the first time and the "Viennese Choir Girls" were founded.

What began with ten singers is now a chamber choir of 25 dedicated young ladies between the ages of 9 and 15. The girls are taught using the methods of the Vienna Boys' Choir. They sing their own concerts; Again and again, they can be seen on special projects with their male colleagues - for example at the Climate Summit in the Vienna Hofburg in 2018 or at the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic in 2023.

With the school year 2024/25, the choir girls will be admitted to the Gymnasium of the Vienna Boys' Choir so that their musical education can be intensified and so that they can also go on concert tours at home and abroad.
