[아츠앤컬쳐] ‘MAVKA, THE FOREST SONG’은 우크라이나의 첫 애니메이션 장편 영화로 전 세계에 개봉되었다. ‘마브카(Mavka)’는 우크라이나 민속과 신화에 등장하는 가상의 인물로, 고대 슬라브 전통과 의식, 민속적인 상징, 민요, 그리고 특히 우크라이나 시인의 고전 동화 <The Forest Song>에서 영감을 받아 탄생되었다.

애니메이션 마브카는 2014년 Animagrad 스튜디오가 우크라이나 젊은 층에서 우크라이나만의 애니메이션 히어로에 대한 니즈에 부응하고자 시작하여, 2017년에 첫 번째 B2B 티저를 발표했다. MAVKA는 유럽 애니메이션 포럼 카툰 무비에서 우크라이나 프로젝트로 최초로 선정되었는데, 이것이 국제적인 MAVKA의 여정의 시작이다.

그러나 MAVKA 프로젝트의 여정은 쉽지 않았다. COVID 시대를 극복해야 했으며, 최종 제작 단계에서는 러시아 침공으로 폭탄 피난소에서 영화를 완성해야만 했다. 심지어 영화가 완성되었을 때는 전쟁으로 발행 여부를 결정하는 것 또한 어려운 과제였다. 우크라이나 극장의 절반만 운영되고, 목표 관객인 부모와 어린이 1,000만 명이 해외로 이동한 상태였다. 또한 공연은 공중 경보와 정전으로 끊임없이 중단되기도 하였다.

그러나 이 작품은 행복한 결말과 생태학적 문제 관련 주제를 다루며 발표되었고, 전세계 148개 국가의 대형 스크린에서 상영되었으며 전 세계 박스 오피스 수익도 2,000만 달러를 넘어섰다. 이 영화는 32개 언어로 더빙되었으며, MAVKA의 IP는 다양한 라이선싱 및 소비자 제품 거래로 그 영역을 넓혔다.

우크라이나의 광활한 숲은 예부터 끝없는 비밀과 신비로움을 품고 있다. 그곳은 고대 나무 사이에 서식하는 놀라운 신화적인 생물들의 고향이며, 그들은 신성한 영역을 충실히 지키고 있다. ‘마브카(Mavka)’는 숲의 정령이자 새로운 수호자다. 그녀의 주된 임무는 숲과 숲의 신성한 심장인 생명의 근원을 어떤 공격이나 침입으로부터 보호하는 것이다. 이에는 인간들의 공격도 포함된다.

이 영화는 이러한 숲의 여신 마브카가 인간 소년 루카스와 사랑에 빠지는 이야기다. 그녀는 아름답고 쾌활하며 배려심이 많고 성실하며 부드럽지만, 숲과 가까운 생물들을 보호할 때는 강인하고 결단력 있다. 마브카는 독특한 외모와 우아함을 지니고, 무용수처럼 우아하게 걷고, 얼굴과 몸은 고대의 진정한 룬으로 덮여 있으며, 사랑하는 루카스의 음악을 들을 때면 빛이 난다. 숲의 령으로서 그녀는 악을 물리치고 세계를 평화롭고 조화롭게 지키기 위해 싸우며, 이를 통해 선은 항상 이길 것이고, 사랑으로 세계를 더 나은 곳으로 바꿀 수 있다는 메시지를 전달한다.

우리가 사는 세계는 경계가 없으며, 모두의 집이며, 우리는 모든 이를 보호해야할 책임이 있다. MAVKA는 이 메시지를 애니메이션만의 보편적인 언어와 스토리, 시각적 영상을 통해 우크라이나 서사와 조화롭게 표현하고 있다.

MAVKA, THE FOREST SONG FOR PEACE

“MAVKA. THE FOREST SONG” is the first Ukrainian animated feature film to be released worldwide. Mavka is a fictional female character that appears in Ukrainian folklore and mythology. She was inspired by ancient Slavic traditions and rituals, decorations and patterns, folk symbols, costumes, folk songs, and especially the classic fairy tale “The Forest Song” written by a Ukrainian poet.

The animation “Mavka” began in 2014 when the Animagrad Studio responded to the need for a Ukrainian animation hero among young Ukrainian audiences, and released its first B2B teaser in 2017. “Mavka” was the first Ukrainian project to be selected at the European Animation Forum Cartoon Movie, marking the start of Mavka’s international journey.

However, the journey of the “Mavka” project was not easy. They had to overcome all the challenges of the COVID era, and in the final production stage, they faced a Russian invasion and the production team had to complete the movie in a bomb shelter. Even when the movie was ready for release, deciding whether to release it during wartime was also a difficult task. Only half of the theaters in Ukraine were operating, and the target audience of 10 million parents and children had moved abroad. In addition, performances were constantly interrupted by air raid warnings and power outages.

This work was released at the right time when local and international audiences needed it most, dealing with relevant topics such as happy endings and ecological issues. It was screened on large screens in 148 countries worldwide, and global box office revenues exceeded $20 million. The film was dubbed in 32 languages, and Mavka's IP expanded its reach through various licensing and consumer product deals.

The vast forests of Ukraine have always been filled with endless secrets and mysteries. It is home to amazing mythical creatures that inhabit between ancient trees, faithfully guarding the sacred area. **Mavka** is the spirit of the forest and its new guardian. Her main task is to protect the forest and the source of life, the sacred heart of the forest, from any attacks or intrusions, including those by humans.

This film tells the story of Mavka, the goddess of the forest, falling in love with a human boy, Lukas. She is beautiful, cheerful, caring, sincere, gentle, but strong and decisive when protecting creatures close to the forest area. Mavka has a unique appearance and elegance, walks gracefully like a dancer, her face and body are covered with ancient true runes, and she glows when she hears the music of Lukas, whom she loves.

As the spirit of the forest, she must fight to repel evil and keep the world peaceful and harmonious. This work conveys the message that good will always win, and standing with love can change the world for the better.

The world we live in has no boundaries, it is everyone’s home, and we have a responsibility to protect everyone. “MAVKA” expresses this message harmoniously with the Ukrainian narrative through the universal language of animation, story, and visual imagery.
