[아츠앤컬쳐] 루아르강은 프랑스에서 가장 긴 강으로 길이가 약 1,000킬로미터에 달하며, 프랑스 산악 지대인 마시프 센트럴 남쪽의 세벤느 산맥에서 발원한다. 루아르강은 느베르와 오를레앙을 거쳐 북쪽으로 흐르다가 투르, 앙제, 낭트 등 다른 도시를 지나 서쪽으로 방향을 틀어 생나자르 마을의 비스카이 만에 이르러 대서양으로 흘러간다.

느베르에서 오를레앙을 거쳐 낭트까지 이어지는 길고 구불구불한 루아르강 중앙부에는 프랑스의 가장 중요한 와인 산지 중 하나인 루아르 계곡이 있으며, 수세기 동안 프랑스 왕들이 즐겨 찾았던 유명하고 아름다운 성인 샤토 드 라 루아르가 자리한 동화 같은 풍경 속에 포도밭과 과수원이 강둑에 늘어서 있어 프랑스의 정원이라고도 불린다.

루아르 계곡은 프랑스 와인 산지 중 가장 많은 포도 품종과 와인이 생산되는 곳으로, 그 특징이 매우 다양하다. 유명한 화이트와인, 고급 레드와인, 맛있는 스파클링 와인, 우아한 스트로와인 등 거의 모든 종류의 와인이 이곳에서 생산되며 대부분 가장 높은 등급인 프랑스의 원산지 통제 명칭 A.O.C. 인정을 받고 있다.

고고학적 증거에 따르면 로마인들이 서기 1세기 갈리아에 정착하면서 루아르 계곡에 포도밭을 만들었다고 한다. 오늘날에도 두 개의 로마 다리 기초가 남아 있는 오를레앙 남동쪽의 고대 마을 푸이 쉬르 루아르와 상세르 근처에서 이 포도밭을 볼 수 있다. 루아르 계곡의 가장 동쪽에 위치한 이 지역에서는 루아르 강변의 두 강둑을 사이에 두고 서로 가까운 거리에 와인 생산지인 상세르와 뿌이 쉬르 루아르가 마주보고 있다. 여기에서 주요 포도 품종인 소비뇽 블랑으로 세계 최고 수준의 우수한 상세르와 뿌이 퓌메 와인이 만들어진다.

상세르와 뿌이 퓌메는 모두 황금빛 밀짚 노란색과 초록색 색조를 띠는 화이트와인인데, 뿌이 퓌메가 더 진한 경향이 있다. 강렬한 부케는 감귤류, 복숭아, 살구, 아카시아 꽃, 블랙 커런트 향이 나는 기분 좋은 미네랄 향이다. 뿌이 퓌메는 ‘연기’를 의미하는 퓌메라는 이름에서 알 수 있듯이 부싯돌의 미네랄 힌트가 돋보인다. 이 와인은 드라이하고 섬세한 풍미가 있고 세련된 맛이 있으며, 미네랄이 풍부하고 과일 향으로 부드러워진 산미가 두드러진다.

이 두 와인은 모두 소비뇽 블랑 포도로 만들어졌지만 시각적인 면과 맛에서 약간의 차이가 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 미국의 와인 학자 카렌 맥 닐은 “사실 블라인드 테이스팅에서 뿌이 퓌메와 상세르를 구분하기는 어려울 수 있다”고 말한다.(1)

Loire Valley Wine (Part One)

Loire is the longest river in France with a length of approximately one thousand kilometers. It rises in the Cevennes range, in the southern part of the French mountainous area of Massif Central. From there, Loire flows north through the cities of Nevers and Orleans and then it turns west passing other cities as Tours, Angers and Nantes until reaching the Bay of Biscay at the town of Saint-Nazare where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

Right in the long, sinuous central part of the Loire, from Nevers, then through Orleans and until Nantes is one of the most important French wine regions, the Loire Valley, also known as the Garden of France due to the abundance of vineyards and fruit orchards which line the banks of the river in a fairy-tale landscape embellished with the famous and beautiful Castles (Chateaux de la Loire) which were the favorite residences of the courts of the kings of France for centuries.

Loire Valley is the most diversified of the French wine regions, given the impressive diversity of grape varieties and wines that characterize it. Just about every kind of wine is made there: renowned whites, appreciated reds, delicious sparkling, elegant straw wines and besides, most of the appellations are recognized as Appellation d’Origine Controlée.

Archaeological evidence suggest that the Romans planted vineyards in the Loire Valley during their settlement of Gaul in the first century AD, as can be seen near the ancient towns of Pouilly-sur-Loire and Sancerre, just southeast of Orleans, where the foundations of two Roman bridges are still visible today. Here, in the easternmost part of Loire Valley, the homonymous wine-growing areas of Sancerre and Pouilly face each other at a short distance on the two opposite banks of the Loire River. With Sauvignon Blanc, the main local grape variety, the excellent Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé wines are made, among the best in the world of their type.

Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are both white wines with a golden straw yellow color and greenish hues which tend to be deeper in Pouilly-Fumé. Their intense bouquet is pleasantly mineral, with notes of citrus, peach, apricot, acacia flowers, blackcurrants. Pouilly-Fumé stands out for its mineral hints of flint, hence the word fumé in its name meaning “smoke”. These wines taste is dry, finely savory, refined, mineral, with a marked acidity softened by fruity notes.

Even though they are both made with Sauvignon Blanc grapes, these two wines present some visual and taste differences. Nevertheless, as the American wine scholar Karen Mac Neil states, “in truth it can be hard to tell apart Pouilly Fumé and Sancerre in a blind tasting”. (1)
