[아츠앤컬쳐] 흑해 해안에 위치한 반짝이는 보석같이 깊은 문화와 역사성을 자랑하는 도시, 오데사. 오데사는 아름다운 도시기이도 하지만 특히 음악 분야에서 빛을 발하며, 그 명성은 시간이 지날수록 더 넓게 음악의 파장을 따라 울려 퍼져가고 있다. 오데사 출신으로는 유명한 바이올린 교육가 피오트르 스톨리아르스키가 있으며, 그의 헌신적인 교육을 통해 다비드 오이스트라흐와 나탄 밀스타인 같은 20세기의 위대한 바이올리니스트들이 탄생하였다. 이들은 오데사가 낳은 자랑스러운 음악가들이다. 이는 이 도시가 세계적인 음악가로 성장하는 데 얼마나 큰 영향을 미쳤는지를 보여준다.

이러한 바이올린 거장들 외에도 오데사는 여러 음악의 전설들의 요람이다. 피아니스트 에밀 길렐스와 스비아토슬라프 리히터는 이 해안 도시에서 자라며 피아노계의 거장으로 성장하여 전 세계 청중을 감동시켰으며, 또 다른 저명한 피아니스트 슈라 체르카스키도 오데사 출신이다.

이러한 비옥한 음악적 토양의 도시에서 오데사 필하모닉 오케스트라가 탄생하였다. 1937년에 설립되어 대부분 오데사 음악원 졸업생들로 구성된 이 오케스트라는 탄생하자마자 곧 음악계의 등불이 되었다. 훌륭한 음악의 텃밭에서 탄생한 오데사 필하모닉 오케스트라는 소련 정권 시기에도 네이선 라흐린, 유리 테미르카노프, 쿠르트 샌더링, 아르비드 얀손스, 마리스 얀손스 같은 지휘자들의 지도 아래 명성을 쌓아갔으나 소련 내 국경 밖으로 나가는 것은 금지되어 모스크바와 상트페테르부르크와 달리, 국제 무대에서 그들의 재능을 선보일 기회를 박탈당했다.

1991년 우크라이나의 독립과 함께 오데사 필하모닉 오케스트라에게도 르네상스가 찾아왔다. 1993년 1월, 우크라이나 정부는 호바트 얼의 지도 아래 오케스트라의 역동적인 진보와 활력을 인정하여 연방 지위를 부여했다. 이 승격은 오케스트라의 새로운 장을 열었고, 호바트 얼의 비전 아래 오케스트라는 드디어 대서양과 적도를 넘어 비엔나의 뮤직페라인, 쾰른의 필하모니, 런던의 바비칸 홀, 마드리드의 국립 대강당, 뉴욕의 카네기 홀, 워싱턴 D.C.의 케네디 센터, 시카고의 오케스트라 홀, 샌프란시스코의 데이비스 홀, 유엔 총회장 등에서 공연하며 글로벌 무대에서 명성을 쌓았다.

2002년 6월, 우크라이나 정부는 오데사 필하모닉 오케스트라에 ‘국립 지위’를 부여하였으며, 이는 키이우를 제외한 모든 우크라이나의 공연 예술 기관 중 최초였다. 이는 우크라이나의 세계적인 문화적 명성에 대한 오케스트라의 뛰어난 공헌을 인정한 것이다.

필자는 오데사 오케스트라의 공연을 올해 처음 접했다. 오케스트라의 웅장한 음악이 너무나도 감미로와서 넋을 잃고 감상했던 감동이 아직도 잔잔하게 마음과 귓가에 남아있다. 관현악과 현악기의 조화가 이렇게 묵직하면서도 부드러울 수 있는지 처음 알았다. 오데사 주민들의 큰 자부심의 원천이며, 오데사 도시의 전통적인 음악 유산을 바탕으로 변화하는 시대 속에서도 묵묵하게 흐르며 번영하는 묵직한 음악적 유산이 오케스트라의 선율이 되어 가슴으로 전달되는 것 같다.

Odesa's Musical Legacy: Melodies Across the Sea

Odesa, a city that shines like a sparkling gem on the Black Sea coast, boasts deep cultural and historical significance. It is not only a beautiful city but also shines brightly in the field of music, with its fame resonating wider and deeper over time. The city is home to renowned violin pedagogue Piotr Stoliarsky, whose dedicated teaching produced some of the 20th century's greatest violinists such as David Oistrakh and Nathan Milstein. These exceptional musicians are often referred to as Odesa’s musical “children,” highlighting how profoundly the city influenced their development into world-class musicians.

Beyond these violin masters, Odesa is the cradle of numerous musical legends. Pianists Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter grew up in this coastal city and rose to become giants in the piano world, moving audiences around the globe. Another distinguished pianist, Shura Cherkassky, also hails from Odesa, further elevating the city's musical stature.

From this fertile musical ground emerged the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra. Established in 1937 and composed mainly of graduates from the Odesa Conservatory of Music, the orchestra quickly became a beacon in the music world. Under the leadership of conductors like Nathan Rachlin, Yuri Temirkanov, Kurt Sanderling, Arvid Jansons, and Mariss Jansons, the orchestra built a reputation for excellence, even during the Soviet era. However, unlike in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the orchestra was prohibited from performing outside the Soviet Union's borders, thus denying them the opportunity to showcase their talents on the international stage.

With Ukraine's independence in 1991, a renaissance came for the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra. In January 1993, the Ukrainian government recognized the orchestra’s dynamic progress and vitality under Hobart Earle’s direction by awarding it federal status. This elevation marked a new chapter for the orchestra. Under Earle's visionary leadership, the orchestra finally crossed the Atlantic and the Equator, performing in prestigious venues such as Vienna’s Musikverein, Cologne’s Philharmonie, London’s Barbican Hall, Madrid’s National Auditorium, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center, Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, San Francisco’s Davies Hall, and the United Nations General Assembly, earning global acclaim.

In June 2002, the Ukrainian government granted the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra "national status," making it the first performing arts institution outside Kyiv to achieve this recognition. This honor acknowledged the orchestra's exceptional contributions to Ukraine’s international cultural reputation.

This year, I experienced the performance of the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra for the first time. The grandeur of the orchestra's music was so exquisite that I was utterly mesmerized, and the lingering emotion still resonates quietly in my heart and ears. I never knew that the harmony between orchestral and string instruments could be so profound yet gentle. The Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra, a source of great pride for the residents of Odesa, continues to flow quietly and prosper based on the city's traditional musical heritage, delivering its rich musical legacy through its melodies.
