산업 도시 드니프로의 중심에 자리한 이 작업장의 창업자인 세르히 씨는 아버지가 엔지니어였고 본인도 공학 전공이었지만, 흙과 불의 매력에 빠져 20살에 도예의 길로 들어섰다. 세월이 흘러, 이 일은 세르히와 그의 아내 에밀리아의 가족 사업으로 성장했고, 그들은 새로운 기술과 창의적인 요소를 더하며 Workshop을 발전시켰다.

현재 Horban Workshop에는 5개의 객실이 있는 소규모 호텔과 아름다운 정원이 있어, 깊은 영감을 선사하는 매우 독특한 공간이 되어 있다. 2020년에는 이 정원이 정원-경관 디자인 및 건축 전국 대회에서 수상하면서, 창조와 휴식의 오아시스로 자리잡았다. 방문객들은 이곳에서 전통을 바탕으로 현대화된 진정한 우크라이나 도예의 분위기를 만끽할 수 있다.

Horban Workshop의 또다른 목표는 우크라이나의 도예를 널리 알리고 가르치는 것이다. 이를 위해 매일 마스터 클래스와 교육 프로그램을 추진하고, 특히 대형 화로에서 굽는 도자기는 독특한 색상과 진정성으로 많은 이들의 사랑을 받고 있다. 이 작업장에서 가장 큰 창작물인 도자기 욕조는 높은 수준의 장인 정신을 보여주고 있다.

접시, 램프, 화분, 도자기 패널 등 이곳에서 생산되는 모든 작품은 동부 우크라이나 전통 도예의 특징을 간직하면서도 현대 건축 및 인테리어와 완벽하게 조화를 이룬다. 상하이에서 열린 EXPO 2010 전시회에서는 Horban Workshop이 현대 우크라이나와 그 문화적 성취의 한 단면으로 소개되었으며, 현재는 이 작업장의 장인들이 만든 작품은 유럽에서부터 미국까지, 전 세계에서 찾아볼 수 있다.

근래 드니프로의 최전선에 있어 제약을 받는 가운데에도 Horban Workshop 작업장은 계속 운영되고 있다. 세르히의 계획은 Workshop을 더욱 발전시키고 이를 통해 우크라이나의 전통 도예와 현대 기술을 결합하는 것이다. 그는 젊은이들에게 더욱 다가가기 위해 창의성을 확장할 새로운 기술과 재료의 도입을 추구하고 있다.

Ukrainian pottery, with its long-standing tradition, stands as a hallmark among Eastern European crafts. Among the most notable workshops is the Horban Workshop, celebrated for its scale and reputation. Over 32 years, this family business has adeptly preserved the traditions of Ukrainian pottery while flexibly adapting to modern changes. As a result, the works of Horban Workshop achieve a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary ceramics.

Located in the heart of the industrial city of Dnipro, this workshop has a unique charm. Serhiy, the founder, began his journey into pottery at the age of 20. Despite his father being an engineer and his own graduation from an engineering college, Serhiy was captivated by the allure of clay and fire, choosing the path of pottery amidst the industrial landscape. Over time, this endeavor evolved into a family business, with Serhiy and his wife Emilia enriching the workshop with new techniques and creative elements.

Today, Horban Workshop is much more than just a pottery studio. It features a small hotel with five rooms and a beautiful garden, offering deep inspiration to all who visit. In 2020, this garden won a national competition in garden and landscape design, establishing Horban Workshop as an oasis of creativity and relaxation. Visitors here can immerse themselves in an atmosphere that modernizes yet honors traditional Ukrainian pottery.

Another primary goal of Horban Workshop is to spread and teach Ukrainian pottery. Daily master classes and educational programs draw people of all ages and professions. Especially loved are the ceramics fired in a large wood-fired kiln, which imbue the pieces with unique colors and authenticity. The largest creations, such as ceramic bathtubs, demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship.

The workshop produces a variety of items, including dishes, lamps, plant pots, and ceramic panels. Each piece embodies the characteristics of traditional Eastern Ukrainian pottery while seamlessly blending with modern architecture and interiors. At the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai, Horban Workshop was showcased as a representation of contemporary Ukraine and its cultural achievements. Today, the artisans’ works are displayed worldwide, from Europe to the United States.

Despite the constraints imposed by the war in Ukraine, with Dnipro being a frontline city, the workshop continues to operate amidst shelling and power outages. Serhiy’s plans include further developing the workshop and combining traditional pottery with modern technologies. He dreams of making Ukrainian pottery more accessible and attractive to young people, introducing new techniques and materials to expand creative possibilities.

Through these efforts, the work of Horban Workshop has become an integral part of Ukrainian cultural life, showcasing how traditional crafts can adapt to modern conditions while preserving their authenticity and uniqueness. This bright example continues to inspire new generations of artisans and art lovers alike.
