[아츠앤컬쳐] 크로아티아는 비교적 작은 나라이지만 다양한 스포츠 부문에서 놀라운 결과를 보여준다. 세계적으로 유명한 루카 모드리치 축구선수와 크로아티아 축구 국가대표팀은 2018년 모스크바에서 열린 세계축구선수권대회 준결승전에서 전 세계 관중으로부터 상당히 높은 평가를 받은 바 있다. 이 축구팀은 그들의 독특한 빨간색과 흰색 체크무늬 셔츠를 입고 크로아티아를 전 세계적으로 홍보했다.

크로아티아에는 각종 스포츠 부문에서 올림픽, 세계선수권대회 및 유럽대회에서 상당한 메달리스트를 보유하고 있는데, 그중에서도 국민 일 인당 가장 많은 메달 수를 얻은 분야가 놀랍게도 태권도다.

미국태권도협회를 통해 오랫동안 태권도 세계화에 참여한 나는 크로아티아가 태권도 강국이라고 자신 있게 말할 수 있다. 크로아티아는 태권도를 받아들인 최고의 유럽국가 중 하나로 태권도 9단의 그랜드 마스터가 많다. 타마라 7단 사범은 오래전부터 한국과 크로아티아 간의 태권도 교류에 많은 노력을 기울여왔으며 특히, 자그레브대학교 운동학부와 리예카대학교의 태권도아카데미에 태권도를 전공과목으로 추진하고자 지금도 노력 중이다.

지난 도쿄올림픽에서 크로아티아는 태권도에서 금메달 1개, 동메달 1개의 쾌거를 이루었고 이전 올림픽에서도 쌍둥이 자매인 아나와 루치아 자니노비치가 태권도에서 메달을 획득한 후 태권도 홍보대사로 계속 활동 중이다.

다수의 태권도 시범단이 2018년과 2019년에 크로아티아를 방문하여 수도 자그레브의 중앙 광장을 비롯한 몇몇 도시에서 멋진 태권도 공연을 보여주었다. 작고 아담한 비엘로바 스포츠홀에서의 태권도 시범단 공연도 성황리에 치렀다. 또한 세계태권도는 2021년 12월 고대도시 두브로브니크에서 열린 슈퍼파이널프로그램 ‘Croatia's Got Talent’에 참가하기 위해 시범단을 파견하기도 했다.

또한, 주목할 만한 일로, 크로아티아 의료 전문가와 태권도 사범이 공동으로 태권도 수련을 특정 장애를 가진 이들을 위한 효과적인 물리치료로 발전시켜, 크로아티아는 장애태권도의 선두 국가가 되었다. 마르티나 페라노비치 사범은 장애인 태권도 훈련 지침서를 출간했고, 김만장 위원장이 이끄는 ‘좋은 이웃 봉사회’는 마르티나의 책을 영문과 한글로 번역, 출판하여 세계적으로 알리는 후원을 하고 있다.

크로아티아의 스포츠는 일반인뿐만 아니라 많은 정치인들의 강력한 지지를 받고 있다. 국제올림픽위원회 크로아티아 즐라트코 마테샤 위원장은 전 총리로서 태권도의 열렬한 지지자다. 많은 사람들은 크로아티아 축구 국가대표팀 셔츠를 입고 2018년 월드컵 결승전에서 크로아티아 축구 대표팀을 열렬히 지지했던 콜린다 그라바르-키타로비치 전 크로아티아 대통령을 기억할 것이다. 그라바르-키타로비치 대통령은 시합에 앞서 한국 국기원이 발행한 명예 9단증을 받았다. 명예 9단증은 지금까지 국내외 인사 44명에게 발급됐는데 해외 여성 인사로는 그라바르-키타로비치 대통령이 최초이며 현재 국제올림픽위원회 위원으로 활약 중이다.

Taekwondo - a strong bridge between Korea and Croatia

Croatia is a relatively small country, but with amazing results in a variety of sports. The world-famous soccer player Luka Modric and the Croatian national soccer team profiled Croatia quite high at the World Soccer Championship in Moscow in 2018 which the world public audience gave the Croatians full support. They globally promoted this unique red and white checkered designed dress that now always reminds us of Croatia.

Croatia has Olympic medalists in numerous sports and we also can add the number of medals from the World Championships and European tournaments. But it is less known, that the largest number of medals per capita in Croatia goes to taekwondo!

As a person who has spent many years working for the American Taekwondo Association and associated with this amazing sport for a long time, I can say with confidence that Croatia is a taekwondo power. There are several local masters with a black belt 9th dan and skillful lady Tamara who is a master 7th dan and who spent a large part of her life promoting taekwondo. She is pushing the promotion of taekwondo as the major subject at the Faculty of Kinesiology at the Zagreb University, and at the Taekwondo Academy established at the University of Rijeka.

At the last Tokyo Olympics, Croatia got one gold medal and one bronze in taekwondo as well. In the previous Olympic games, two twin sisters, Ana and Lucija Zaninovic, both won the Olympic medals in taekwondo. Quite unique!

Numerous taekwondo demonstration teams have visited Croatia in 2019 and shown the beauty of this sport through several performances in a few Croatian cities, including the main square of the Capital City of Zagreb. When they performed in one small cute Croatian town Bjelovar, the sport-hall was not big enough to accommodate all who came to see and meet us. And the World Taekwondo sent the demo team to participate in the Super-final program “Croatia’s got talent” in the ancient city of Dubrovnik in December 2021.

Croatian medical experts and taekwondo masters have jointly developed the taekwondo practice as an effective physical therapy for children with certain disabilities, and Croatia is among the leading countries in para-taekwondo. It shows not only love for this sport but also the social responsibilities to help those in need. Mrs. Martina Peranovic has published an instruction book about training para-taekwondo and the "Good Neighbors Volunteering Association" led by Mr. Kim Man Jang is sponsoring Martina to translate her book into English and Korean, publish to share such an outstanding achievement throughout the world.

Sport in Croatia is strongly supported, not just by people, but also by many politicians. The representative of Croatia to the International Olympic Committee Mr. Zlatko Matesa, Ph.D. is a great supporter of taekwondo. Many would remember the former President of Croatia Mrs. Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic who, dressed in the Croatian national dress, passionately supported the Croatian soccer team at the World Cup final match in 2018. She is now a member of the International Olympic Committee. And she also has honorary taekwondo 9th dan, which is the first foreign female who received it in the world.
