[아츠앤컬쳐] 흐바르는 스플리트에서 페리로 2시간, 쌍동선으로 더 짧은 시간에 도착할 수 있는 달마티아 남부에 위치한 섬으로 신석기 시대로 거슬러 올라가 최초의 생활 공동체의 흔적이 있는 고대 일리리아 정착지이기도 하다. 기원전 384년에 고대 그리스인들이 섬에 도착하여 삶터로서의 잠재력을 인식하였고 13세기에 베네치아인들은 구시가지를 둘러싸고 있는 강력한 요새 성벽을 쌓았고, 언덕 꼭대기에는 강력한 요새 포르티카를 구성하였다. 요새에서 내려다보는 구시가지, 항구, 군도의 전경은 잘 정돈된 아름다움을 느낄 수 있다.

두브로브니크를 비롯한 다른 크로아티아 도시들이 최고의 매력적인 영화 제작 목적지로 소개되었다면, 흐바르섬은 할리우드와 다른 세계 유명인들이 사생활 보장 속에서 고대 도시, 때 묻지 않은 풍경과 섬의 장엄한 아름다움을 둘러싸고 있는 멋진 군도를 즐기고 휴식을 취하는 곳으로 알려져 있다. 또한 흐바르(Hvar)의 항구는 호화 요트 항해 쇼를 보는 듯 수많은 멋진 요트들이 떠 있어 전 세계 갑부들의 멋진 바다 백조들의 쇼를 보는 듯 화려하다.

현지 음식은 단연 신선도와 맛으로 유명하다. 흐바르섬의 와인은 훗날 지판델(Zifandel)로 알려진지역 특정 포도 종인 플라바츠 말리(Plavac Mali)로 만들어진다. 유명한 캘리포니아 와인 생산자인 마이크 그르기츠(Mike Grgich) 씨는 그의 조부모가 미국으로 이주했을 때 가져온 흐바르섬의 플라바츠 말리가 후에 세계적으로 알려진 지판델이 되었음을 확인하는 연구를 자신의 최근 저서에서 공개적으로 인정하였다.

흐바르 마을에는 훌륭한 레스토랑이 많이 있지만 오래도록 내게 기억에 남는 레스토랑은 바로 가브리알 가르시아 마르케스의 소설 ‘백 년의 고독’에 나오는 유명한 도시의 이름을 딴 ‘마콘도’다. 식당 주인 니크샤(Niksa)가 생선을 요리하는 방식에는 생선의 신선도를 잘 음미할 수 있도록 하는 특별한 비법이 숨겨져 있는 듯하다. 우연히 마콘도에 들릴 기회가 있다면 쉐프에게 생선요리를 맡겨보자. 아드리아 해안 최고의 생선 요리 음식을 맛볼 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다.

흐바르 시의 1530년대에 지어진 아스널 하우스는 1612년에 문을 연 유럽 최초의 공공극장 중 하나로 구시가지의 해안가 바로 옆에 있다. 이곳은 17세기 초부터 바로크 극장 공연이 열리는 공공장소로 실제로 유럽에서 귀족과 민간 모두에게 동등하게 개방된 세 번째 실내 극장이었다. 셰익스피어가 1599년 런던에 자신의 유명한 글로브 극장을 열었고 몇 년 후 흐바르의 민속 극장이 열렸음을 비교해볼 때 유럽의 주류 문화 수도에서 멀리 떨어진 한 작은 마을의 놀라운 문화적 성취가 아닐 수 없다.

흐바르는 참으로 쾌적한 지역 날씨를 가지고 있어 지금도 풍부하고 다양한 허브들이 전통적인 방법으로 생산되고 있으며 흐바르를 다양한 색상으로 사시사철 장식해 준다. 이 아름다운 자연의 치유 환경과 수정처럼 푸른 아드리아해의 전망에 잠긴 향기로운 라벤더밭을 걸을 기회가 있다면, 이곳에 오랫동안 머물고자 하는 또 하나의 소원을 갖게 될 것이다.

Hvar – A Green Cultural Oasis in a Blue Paradise

If many Croatian cities and locations, such as Dubrovnik and Split, have profiled themselves as top film-making destinations, the island of Hvar is rather unique in that, despite its rich natural beauty and unspoiled landscapes, it has remained relatively untouched by tourism and the film industry. Just off the coast of Southern Dalmatia, Hvar’s lush flora, ancient cities, and majestic views of the surrounding archipelago attract a wide range of Hollywood and other international celebrities, who come to enjoy the luxurious privacy that the island provides amidst a range of activities to ensure and enrich a restful vacation. The Hvar city harbor in the summer is like a opulent yacht show, where the presence of each lavish boat provides a clue to the island’s highprofile visitors.

Although its celebrity visitors provide an interesting pop culture treasure hunt, the island’s history is equally rich with Easter eggs. The island is an ancient Illyrian settlement, whose first traces of a living community go back to the Neolithic period.

The island’s location and beauty has attracted a wide range of ancient civilizations from the Ancient Greeks in 384 BC, to the Venetians during the 13th Century. The Venetians built strong fortifications to surround the old city, with the fortress Fortica overlooking the top of the hill. While in Hvar, one would be remiss not to make a visit to the top of the fortress, as the view from overlooking the old city, harbor, and the archipelago is simply beyond words.

A visit to Hvar is a simply a feast for all senses, and many of which may be satisfied by indulging in the incredibly sumptuous local cuisine. There are many excellent restaurants in town, but there is one that means a lot to me – Macondo, named after the famous city from Gabrial Garcia Marquez’s novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude. The way Niksa, the restaurant owner, prepares the fish is indescribably special. If by any chance, life brings you to the doors of Macondo, just order the fish, and you will be served the best fish you’ve ever had.

The only worthy complement to a rich local dinner would be a wonderful local wine, and the local wine from Hvar is not something that should be missed. Wine from the Island of Hvar is made from world-famous grapes, the origins for well-known Zinfandel grapes. In fact, in his most recently published book, the famous Californian wine producer Mike Grgich has recognized his heritage from Croatia and the island of Hvar and has also paid for a study to confirm that the Plavac Mali, the very particular local type of grape that his grandparents took from the island of Hvar, had been brought over to America during their immigration and became his vineyard’s prized Zinfandel grape.

The island of Hvar, only two hours from Split by ferry and even shorter by catamaran, boasts remarkable weather, allowing a very rich biodiversity to paint Hvar in many colors. Walking through the magnificent lavender fields, immersed in such a beautiful natural aromatic healing environment with a view of the crystal blue Adriatic Sea, you will have only one wish – to remain on this island for as long as possible.
