[아츠앤컬쳐] 바벨 왕궁과 바벨 언덕은 폴란드에서 역사·문화적으로 가장 중요한 장소이다. 고대 아테네의 아크로폴리스나 로마의 카피톨리니 언덕처럼 크라쿠프에 있어 바벨 왕궁은 큰 의미를 가진다.
비스와강변 위에 높이 솟은 바벨성은 중세 초기부터 대중적 권력과 기독교적 권력의 중심지였고, 몇 세기 동안 폴란드 왕들의 거처이자 국가의 상징과 같은 곳이었다. 현재의 바벨성은 폴란드의 중요한 미술관 중 하나가 되었다.
이곳에서는 20세기 초에 막대한 규모의 복원 작업이 진행되었으며 폴란드가 독립한 후에는 박물관으로 개조되었다. 1930년대에 설립된 이 박물관은 바벨 왕궁, 폴란드 왕과 여왕들, 그리고 위대한 왕들의 수집품 등에 관련된 역사적·예술적 의미를 지닌 작품들을 수집해왔다. 또, 수년간의 수집 정책을 통해 흩어진 역사 유물을 다시 모으고 역사적으로 가치있는 유산들을 기준으로 지역을 나눠 컬렉션을 개발했다.
박물관은 이탈리아 르네상스 시대의 회화, 판화, 조각, 직물 등의 컬렉션으로 구성된 10개의 큐레이터 섹션으로 나누어져 있다. 컬렉션 중에는 지그문트 아우구스투스 2세의 태피스트리, 금세공품, 무기와 갑옷, 도자기, 마이센 자기를 비롯해 그 시대의 건축물들까지 포함되어 있다.
소장 중인 동양미술 작품으로는 유럽에서 가장 큰 오스만 천막 컬렉션이 있다. 또한 7개의 전문화된 예술품 보존 스튜디오를 갖추고 있어 예술 작품 보존의 중요 중심지이기도 하다.
매년 백만 명이 넘는 방문객들이 바벨 왕궁의 상설 전시전과 특별 전시회를 관람하고 있으며 또 몇 백만 명의 사람들이 바벨 언덕을 방문한다. 바벨 왕궁의 상설 전시회에서는 르네상스 시대와 바로크 시대의 왕실의 모습을 재현한 전시를 관람할 수 있다.
또한 왕궁에서 교향곡과 실내악 연주회, 오페라와 궁정 무용 공연과 같은 라이브 공연이 개최되기도 한다. 방문자 센터에는 카페와 상점들이 위치해 있으며, 기타 방문자 서비스가 제공된다.

The Wawel Royal Castle
The Wawel Royal Castle and the Wawel Hill constitute the most historically and culturally important site in Po¬land. It is to Krakow what the Acropolis was to ancient Athens or the Capitoline Hill to Rome.
The rocky outcropping tower¬ing over the banks of the Vistula has been the seat of secular and ecclesiastical power since the early Middle Ages. For centuries the residence of the kings of Poland and the symbol of Polish statehood, the Castle is now one of the country’s prime art museums.
A monumental restoration project was under¬taken in the early years of the 20th century and when Poland regained independence the castle was converted into a residence museum. Established in 1930, the museum collects works of art historically or artistically associated with the Wawel Royal Castle, the kings and queens of Poland, and great magnate collections.
Over the years, the aim of the museum’s acquisitions policy has been to reunite scattered historical objects and develop the collections from the areas established by historically important bequests.
The museum encompasses ten curatorial de¬partments responsible for collections of paintings, in-cluding an important collection of Italian Renaissance paintings, prints, sculpture, textiles, among them the Sigismund II Augustus tapestry collection, goldsmith’s work, arms and armor, ceramics, Meissen porcelain, and period furniture. The museum’s holding in oriental art include the largest collection of Ottoman tents in Europe. With seven specialized conservation studios, the museum is also an important center for the conser¬vation of works of art.
Over one million visitors tour the Castle’s permanent collections and temporary exhibitions each year, while a few million visit the Wawel Hill. The Cas¬tle’s permanent exhibitions recreate the appearance of the royal residence in the Renaissance and Baroque eras.
The Wawel Royal Castle also hosts a lively program of events including symphonic and chamber music con¬certs and performances of opera and court dance. The visitor center holds cafés, shops, and other visitor services.
