[아츠앤컬쳐] 이탈리아에 가면 피에몬테 주에서 꼭 방문해봐야 할, 그림같이 아름다운 시골이 있다. 언덕과 포도밭, 형형색색의 들판으로 둘러싸인 알바는 ‘랑게’로 알려진 이 지역의 중심 도시이다. ‘랑게’는 언덕을 의미하는 피에몬테 방언인 ‘랑가’에서 유래한 말이다.

고대 로마 시대에 탄생한 역사적 도시이자 랑게 지역의 중심에 위치한 이른바 허브 도시인 알바는 와인업계에서 중추적 역할을 하고 있다. DOCG 등급의 와인인 바르바레스코, 바롤로, 모스카토 및 DOC 등급의 바르베라, 돌체토, 네비올로가 이곳에서 생산되어 700ha에 이르는 포도밭을 가진 약 300 개의 와이너리에서 판매된다. 다양한 포도 품종과 양조 기술 및 이 와인들이 생산되는 토양의 성분으로 인해 이들 와인 각각은 독특한 색상과 풍미를 자랑하며 전 세계적으로 유명하다. 

2014년, 로에로, 몬테라토와 함께 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등재된 랑게는 숨막힐 듯 아름다운 전경과 제과 생산지이자 트러플 버섯으로 가득한 지역으로 유명할 뿐만 아니라 와인 생산의 세계적 벤치마크인 덕분에 문화 경관으로 알려져 있다.

드넓은 포도밭이 펼쳐진 랑게 지역은 다양한 견과류 품종의 본고장이기도 하다. 세계적으로 유명한 초콜릿과 제과 회사들이 이곳에 있는 이유도 바로 그 때문이다. 도토리, 헤이즐넛, 호두가 이곳의 토양 조건으로 인해 건강하게 자라는 나무에서 나온다. 또한 이 나무들은 트러플 버섯이 자라기에 유리한 환경을 제공한다. 알바는 트러플 애호가들 사이에서도 잘 알려져 있는데, 이는 화이트 트러플이 주로 발견되는 이곳에서 매년 국제 화이트 트러플 박람회가 열리기 때문이다. 포도 수확이 7월에 시작하여 9월 말에 끝나면, 10월부터 12월까지 트러플 채취가 이루어진다.

이 지역은 수 세기에 걸친 포도주 양조 기술에 대한 전문 지식을 보여주는 장인 정신으로, 때로는 얼마나 위대하게 인간과 자연이 본질적으로 결합되어 있는지를 끊임없이 상기시켜 준다.

랑게 지역에 대한 한 가지 재미있는 사실은 “Big Benches” 검색을 바탕으로 여행 계획을 짤 수 있다는 것이다. 말 그대로 대형 벤치를 의미하는 “Big Benches”는 지역 사회의 관광을 촉진하고자 2010년에 시작된 프로젝트의 일환이다. 이 “Big Benches”는 랑게 지역 전역에서 찾아볼 수 있으며, 방문자는 거대한 벤치에 앉아 경이로움과 호기심으로 가득 찬 어린아이 같은 눈으로 눈앞에 펼쳐진 멋진 경치를 감상할 수 있다.

LANGHE

If you happen to be in Italy, there is a picturesque, scenic rural area you cannot miss visiting in Piedmont. Surrounded by hills, vineyards and colorful fields lies Alba, central town in this area known as Langhe (the term comes from langa, Piedmontese dialect that means hill). Alba is a historical town, a sort of hub in the heart of the Langhe, born in ancient roman times and central to the wine-related world, as the DOCG wines Barbaresco, Barolo and Moscato and DOC Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo are produced here and sold in almost 300 wineries that own 700 hectares of vineyards. The manifold grape varieties, winemaking techniques and the soil composition of the towns these wines are produced in, make each of them unique in taste and color too, and famous all over the world.

Langhe is part of the Unesco World Heritage Site that includes Roero and Monferrato since 2014, and it is known to be a cultural landscape thanks to the breathtaking views and a worldwide known benchmark for wine-making production, as well as and confectionery producing area and truffle filled zone.

Not only does this area comprises of vineyards, but the Langhe is also home to a wide variety of nuts varieties. Hence why, globally-renowned chocolate and confectionery producers are here, where acorns, hazelnuts and nuts stem from the trees that grow up healthily due to the soil conditions. These trees also represent a favorable environment for truffles: Alba is also known among truffle lovers, as the International White Truffle Fair is yearly held here, where white truffle is mostly found. The hunt for truffles starts from October until December, following the grapes harvest which begins in July and ends in late September.

This land is a constant reminder of how greatly man and nature sometimes are intrinsically bound together because of craftsmanship, showing centuries-old winegrowing techniques expertise.

One fun fact about the Langhe area, is that a tour can be arranged based on the search for the Big Benches. The Big Benches are quite literally extra large benches, part of a project started in 2010 which promotes tourism in local communities. These Big Benches can be found all over the territory of the Langhe, and allows the visitors to observe with child-like eyes, full of wonder and curiosity, the scenic landscapes in front of them, sitting on the huge benches.
