[아츠앤컬쳐] 이탈리아의 동해인 아드리아해를 따라가면 고유의 전통과 문화를 가진 수많은 도시들을 만날 수 있다. 이 여러 도시들 중 이번 호에 소개해드릴 도시는 몰리세 지방에 위치한 바다의 도시, 테르몰리다.

몰리세 지방과 도시 테르몰리는 존재감이 매우 없는 지역이라는 평을 들어왔다. 하지만 자신들의 낮은 존재감에 몰리세 사람들은 주눅들지 않았고 이를 기회삼아 새로운 관광객을 유치하고 지역의 숨겨진 매력을 알리고자 노력했다. 그 결과 오늘날 몰리세 지방은 ‘이탈리아의 숨겨진 마지막 진주’라고 불립니다. 몰리세 지방의 성공적인 재발견에는 바로 도시 테르몰리가 있었다.

테르몰리는 3만 명이 조금 안되는 도시다. 이 도시의 외곽에는 ‘오래된 마을’이라고 불리는 관광명소가 있다. 곶의 절벽해안을 따라 지어졌으며 육중한 벽에 둘러싸여 있는 이 곳에는 형형색색의 집들과 골목길들이 있다. 이 중, 레예첼레라고 불리는 골목은 이탈리아에서 가장 좁은 길로, 그 폭이 32센티미터까지 좁아진다고 한다.

‘오래된 마을’의 수공예품 가게와 골목길들을 지나다보면 테르몰리 도시의 두오모 광장이 나온다. 이 광장에는 현지인들이 애정하는 풀리아-로마네스크 양식으로 이루어진 산타 마리아 대성당이 있다. 한편 테르몰리를 대표하는 건축물은 스베보 성이라고 할 수 있는데요, 과거 이 성이 테르몰리 시민들을 바다로부터 지켜주었고, 오늘날 도시의 특색을 상징하는 건축물이기도 하다.

테르몰리는 오래된 어업전통을 가지고 있는 어부들의 도시이기도 하다. 매년 8월에는 어부들의 안전을 바다의 위협으로부터 지켜주는 성 바쏘와 성 파트로노를 기념하는 행사를 개최하기도 하다. 해안을 걷다보면 전통 낚시 기계인 트라보키를 만날 수 있는데, 이 오래된 낚시 기계는 지금도 가끔씩 쓰이고 있다고 하다.

테르몰리는 지중해 음식을 사랑하는 사람들에게 최적의 관광도시다. 아침에는 ‘아 쉬카페테(a shcaffette)’라고 불리는 신선한 생선을 구매할 수 있는데, 이 별칭은 뱃일이 끝난 어부가 남은 생선을 집에 가져가는 작은 바구니의 이름에서 유래되었다고 한다. 테르몰리의 전통요리인 브로데또라는 생선 스프요리와 현지 빵을 같이 꼭 드셔보시길 바란다.

마지막으로 소개해드릴 행사는 매년 8월 15일 열리는 테르몰리 불꽃축제다. 이는 1566년 터키의 테르몰리 도시 침공을 기억하기 위한 행사다. 넋을 놓고 보게되는 이 행사의 대규모 불꽃놀이는 ‘성의 불’이라고 부르기도 한다.

테르몰리와 몰리세는 이탈리아의 숨겨진 진주와도 같은 곳이다. 이 곳은 자신들의 전통과 그 아름다움을 오랜시간 지켜온 지역인만큼, 진정한 이탈리아의 모습을 경험하고 싶은 분들에게 완벽한 여행지가 될 것이다.

Termoli 

The Italian Adriatic coast is famous for its endless seaside cities, each of which has a unique culture and traditions. In recent years, Termoli has become one of the most unique towns on the coast and the best known in the Molise region.

Termoli and the Molise region have often been at the center of attention for a controversial reason: the area was so little known in Italy, it led many to doubt its very existence. However, this belief has not discouraged the people of Molise. On the contrary, they have used this unfortunate belief to attract new visitors. This approach has proven to be highly successful: to date, the region is called the "last hidden gem of Italy" and Termoli has been among the frontrunners of this change.

Termoli is a town of approximately 30,000 inhabitants. Its ancient centre, commonly known as the paese vecchio (“old town”) is located on a promontory overlooking the sea and it is surrounded by imposing walls. Inside these walls, there are endless picturesque buildings and alleys. Among these, the rejecelle is the narrowest alley in Italy, reaching up to thirty-two centimetres in width.

Walking through the streets of the old town, the fascinating local craft shops and the alleys intertwine up to the Piazza del Duomo. In this square, the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Purificazione in Apulian-Romanesque style is particularly loved by the locals. However, the most important symbol of the town is the majestic Suevian Castle that stands over the town. While in ancient times the Castle protected Termoli from attackers, it is now the town’s identity symbol: a popular saying argues that the locals that live far from home will eventually always find their way back to the Castle.

Termoli is a fishing town with a strong maritime culture. Every August the locals celebrate San Basso, the fishermen’s Patron Saint that protects sailors from the dangers of the sea. Furthermore, you may notice the presence of “trabocchi”, ancient fishing systems that are occasionally still in use.

Termoli is also the perfect place for those who love the Mediterranean cuisine: you can buy fresh fish every morning, commonly called 'a shcaffette. The term was used in the past to describe a small basket of fish fishermen could take home after the day's work. The best known local dish is the brodetto, a tasty fish soup to be enjoyed with local bread.

Finally, on August 15^th the town commemorates the capture of Termoli by the Turks in 1566. This day is remembered with a breathtaking fireworks display called l’incendio del castello (the Castle’s blaze).

Termoli and the Molise region are true hidden gems; they have maintained their traditional beauty and are the perfect destination for those who want to have the most authentic Italian experience!
