오늘날 많은 이탈리아 가족, 커플 또는 친구들은 삼삼오오로 모여 크리스마스 시장을 방문하는 것을 정기 행사로 생각한다. 일상 생활에서 벗어나 잠깐의 휴식을 즐기고 크리스마스 가게와 노점들이 주는 따스함과 갖가지 소리, 불빛들에 푹 빠질 수 있는 좋은 기회이다. 시장을 방문한다는 것은 아직까지 접할 기회가 없었던 이탈리아의 여러 지역들을 발견하고, 여름에 사랑받았던 장소를 겨울에 다시 한번 경험하며 감상할 수 있는 좋은 핑계가 되기도 한다.
정통 이탈리아 지역 문화에 대해 더 자세히 알고 싶다면 이탈리아 크리스마스 시장을 방문해볼 만하다. 대부분 장인이 만든 제품이 많고 무료로 감상할 수도 있으니 한정된 예산으로 며칠간 휴가를 보내고 싶은 이들에게 더할 나위 없이 좋은 선택이 될 것이다.

가장 유명한 크리스마스 시장들은 두 말할 것도 없이 이탈리아 북부 트렌티노-알토 아디제 주에 있는 시장들인데, 아담한 목조 시골집들, 티롤 스타일의 장인 정신이 돋보이는 제품들과 미식 문화를 경험할 수 있어 확실히 전통적인 이미지에 더 가까운 모습을 보여준다. 이 기간에 꼭 방문해야 할 도시로는 볼차노, 브렛사노네, 브루니코, 글로렌차, 메라노, 트렌토, 비피테노 등을 꼽을 수 있다.
그러나 이탈리아의 각 지역에는 고유한 음식, 와인 및 저마다 분위기가 다른 독특한 크리스마스 시장들이 있으며, 이러한 시장들은 종종 해당 지역에 사는 주민들의 정신을 반영한다. 항상 나무로 지은 부스가 마련되어 있는 것은 아니지만 일부 시장은 실내에 노점상들이 들어서 있고, 또 다른 시장들은 예술품의 전시와 판매가 함께 이루어지는 크리스마스 마을(토스카나 주의 아레초에서 볼 수 있듯이) 형태를 여전히 유지하고 있어 방문객을 마법과 환상의 세계로 데려간다.
전통적인 크리스마스 디저트와 음료에서부터 일상용품, 크리스마스 화환과 같은 사랑스러운 장식품들, 성탄 장면을 연출하는 프레세페를 꾸밀 수제 인형에 이르기까지 우리가 원하는 모든 것을 이들 크리스마스 시장에서 찾을 수 있다.

Sipping mulled wine while buying Christmas gifts, ice skating under the twinkling evening lights, eating roasted chestnuts with family or friends... these are just some of the fascinating activities that await you when visiting Italy's enchanting Christmas markets, which take shape in both large cities and small towns from mid-November until Epiphany, January 6.
Many Italian families, couples or groups of friends nowadays consider a visit to the Christmas markets a regular event during the colder months: a great opportunity to enjoy a moment of escape from everyday life and immerse themselves in the warmth, sounds and lights offered by the booths. Visiting the markets is also an excuse to discover areas of Italy that you haven't yet had a chance to get to know, and appreciate or relive places you loved in the summer at a winter time.
Visiting Italian Christmas markets is a good idea if you want to learn more about authentic Italian regional culture. In most of them there are many products made by artisans, and also they are free, so they are a good option for those who plan to spend a few days on a budget.
Christmas markets in Italy are many and far more varied and unique than is commonly thought. It is very difficult to find a common element for all Christmas markets in Italy, because there are as many differences between them as there are regional and local realities.
The most famous are undoubtedly the Christmas markets of Trentino - Alto Adige, in northern Italy, which are definitely closer to the traditional image, with wooden cottages and a Tyrolean type of craftsmanship and gastronomy. Some of the must-visit towns during this period are Bolzano, Bressanone, Brunico, Glorenza, Merano, Trento, and Sterzing.
But each Italian region has its own Christmas markets, which differ with unique food and wine products and atmosphere, often reflecting the spirit of the people who inhabit the area. They do not always have wooden booths, but some markets are organized with indoor stalls, and some take the form of Christmas Villages (such as in Arezzo, Tuscany), where artistic display and sales come together, and the visitor is transported to a magical and fantastic setting.
At Christmas markets everything your heart desires can be found: from traditional Christmas sweets and typical drinks, to everyday items, from lovingly crafted decorations such as wreaths, to handmade figurines to decorate nativity scenes.
