[아츠앤컬쳐] 예술은 세상을 구하기도 하며, 자신의 정체성을 찾는데도 도움이 되기도 한다. 예술을 통해 자신이 속한 사회와 문화, 그리고 자신이 속한 국가의 독특한 모습을 이해하게 되는 것이다. 예술가이자 디자이너인 알리나와 카리나 가에비는 그들의 독특한 예술 세계와 GAEVA.UA 브랜드를 통해 이를 보여주고 있다.

2017년, 뛰어난 예술가인 마리아 프리마첸코의 후손인 알리나와 카리나 가에비, 두 자매는 10~11세기 고대 우크라이나의 전통 직물 장식 기법인Vybiyka를 현대적으로 재해석한 의류 제작을 시작하였다. 나무판을 이용하여 직물에 패턴을 만들었으며, 그 해 말 카리나는 완벽함이 아닌 불완전함에서 아름다움을 찾는 Wabi-Sabi 철학을 바탕으로 한 디자이너 의류 컬렉션을 만들었다. Wabi-Sabi는 시간이 지나면서 변화하는 물건의 여정을 감상하는 철학으로 변화와 인간의 불완전한 현실을 받아들이며, 결함과 노화를 추함이 아닌 아름다움으로 받아들이는 것이다. 알리나와 카리나 가에비 자매는 이 철학을 그들의 디자인에 적용하여, 그들의 작품이 시간이 지나면서 변화하는 과정을 보여주고, 그 과정에서 생기는 불완전함을 아름답게 표현하였다. 그들은 이 컬렉션으로 New Fashion Zone 국제 대회의 대상을 수상하였고, 이로써 GAEVA 브랜드가 시작되었다.

브랜드의 목표는 단순함과 관찰의 예술을 강조하며, 이를 통해 어둠 속에서 선의 순수성을 찾아내는 것으로 이는 Wabi Sabi 철학에 의해 성공적으로 통합되어 독특한 이미지를 창조하며, 우크라이나와 우크라이나인 전체에 대한 새롭고 현대적인 시각을 전파한다.

두 자매의 협업은 예술과 패션의 완벽한 조화를 이루어진다. 알리나의 그림과 그래픽 그리고 카리나의 절제된 미니멀리스트, 구조적인 의류 디자인과 스타일이 서로를 보완하며, 탄탄하고 완벽한 하모니를 보여준다. 이를 바탕으로 한 2022년에 시작된 그들의 프로젝트 ‘...재에서 꽃이 자라날 것’은 그들의 유연한 창의성을 보여준다. 그들의 프로젝트는 문양에서 시작되었으며, 약 200개의 문양, 수제 자수 조끼의 캡슐 컬렉션, Vybiyka로 장식된 컬렉션, 도장과 문양의 컬렉션 등, 17세기 후반과 18세기 초반의 코사크 장로들의 시대를 현대적으로 대중화하는 것이다.

전쟁 이후 가에비 자매는 오스트리아로 이동하여 그곳에서 예술활동을 계속하여 2023년 10월, 파리의 패션 위크에서 다양한 형태와 의미의 8개의 의류 이미지로 구성된 캡슐 컬렉션을 선보였다.

카리나 가에비는 “나는 우리의 가능성을 보여주고, 우크라이나가 얼마나 다양했는지 보여주고 싶었습니다.”라고 말했다. 빈티지 프린트와 그들의 해석, 전통적인 기술과 업사이클링: GAEVA.UA의 이러한 키워드들은 Wabi Sabi 철학에 의해 통합되고, 독특한 이미지를 창조하는 이미지로 구현되어 전반적으로 우크라이나에 대한 새롭고 현대적인 시각으로 우크라이나의 정체성을 보여주고 있다.

The brand of Ukrainian identity - GAEVA.UA.

Art can save the world and also help people find their own identity. Through art, one can understand the unique aspects of the society, culture, and national characteristics they belong to. Alina and Karina Gaeva, unique artists and designers, undoubtedly prove this through their unique artistic world and the GAEVA.UA brand.

In 2017, Alina and Karina Gaeva, descendants of the outstanding artist Maria Primachenko, started making basic clothing using Vybiyka, a traditional Ukrainian textile decoration technique of 10th to 11th century . They created patterns on the fabric using wooden boards, and at the end of that year, Karina created a designer clothing collection based on the Wabi-Sabi philosophy, which finds beauty in imperfection. Wabi-Sabi is a philosophy that appreciates the journey and character of things that change over time, accepting change and the imperfect reality of humans, and accepting defects and aging as beauty, not ugliness. Alina and Karina Gaeva applied this philosophy to their designs, showing the process of their works changing over time and beautifully expressing the imperfections that arise in the process. They won the grand prize at the New Fashion Zone International Competition with this collection, marking the beginning of the GAEVA brand.

The goal of the brand is to emphasize the art of simplicity and observation, and through this, to find the purity of lines in the darkness. This is successfully integrated by the Wabi Sabi philosophy, creating a unique image and propagating a new and modern perspective of Ukraine and all Ukrainians.

The collaboration of the two sisters achieves a perfect harmony of art and fashion. Alina’s paintings and graphics and Karina’s restrained, minimalist, structural clothing design and style complement each other, showing a solid and perfect harmony. Based on this, their project “… Flowers will grow from the ashes” started in 2022, showing their flexible creativity.

Their project started with patterns and now includes about 200 patterns, a capsule collection of handmade embroidered vests, a collection decorated with Vybiyka, a collection of stamps and patterns, etc., modernizing the era of Cossack elders in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

After the war, the Gaeva sisters moved to Austria and continued their artistic activities there. In October 2023, they presented a capsule collection composed of eight clothing images of various forms and meanings at Paris Fashion Week.

"I only wanted to open the veil of our possibilities, to show how different Ukraine was and will be," says Karina Gaeva.

Vintage prints and their interpretations, traditional techniques, and upcycling: These keywords of GAEVA.UA are integrated by the Wabi Sabi philosophy and implemented in images that create unique images, showing a new and modern perspective of the entire Ukraine, representing the identity of Ukraine.
