[아츠앤컬쳐] 1974년 10월 18일, 우크라이나의 헴렐니츠키 지역에서 태어난 갈리나 부치크브스카를 부르는 이름은 다양하다. 그녀는 각종 교육, 경영학 학위에 교육학 박사이며 헴렐니츠키 인문-교육 아카데미의 인문학부 학장이자 응용 예술 및 기술 학과 교수, 라이나 명예 예술가로 150편 이상의 과학 논문을 썼다. 그녀는 문화 및 민족 예술 교육에 관한 과학 학교를 설립하고, 우크라이나 최고의회와 교육과학부, 국립교육과학아카데미의 표창을 받았다. 민속예술 대가 연합과 디자이너 연합의 일원으로서의 그녀의 이력은 그녀에게 우크라이나의 예술과 교육의 빛나는 별이라는 칭호를 가져다 주었다.

갈리나는 예술적 가죽 가공 기술과 우크라이나 전통인 모탄카(Motanka) 인형 분야에 창작 활동을 펼치고 있다. 모탄카는 우크라이나 민속 인형으로 과거와 현재가 융합된 작은 예술 작품이며, 조상과의 연결고리이자 세대 간의 중재자로서 우크라이나 문화에서 모탄카 인형은 자수가 놓인 수건, 직조, 도자기, 도예 등과 같은 공예 활동이다.

모탄카는 우크라이나 가정에서 오랜 세월 동안 전해져 온 전통으로 번영, 선량함, 희망의 상징이며 가족의 결속과 다양한 세대 간의 깊은 연결을 상징한다. 바늘과 가위 대신 천으로 묶어 인형을 만드는 과정을 뜻하는 ‘motaty’에서 유래한 모탄카는 인간의 “찌르거나 자르지도 못하는 운명”의 수호자로 여겨진다. 일반적으로 인간 형상(여성이나 아이)으로 만들어진 인형은 가족 옷의 천 조각을 묶어 만들고, 하나 하나가 모두 유일하며 가정과 주민들을 보호하는 수호자 역할을 한다.

모탄카는 일반적인 인형과는 다르게 ‘빈’ 얼굴을 가지고 있다. 우크라이나 조상들은 인형에 얼굴을 주면 사람의 영혼이 그에 묶일 수 있다고 믿었다. 따라서 얼굴 특징 대신 모탄카 인형에는 다양한 색상의 실을 십자 모양으로 장식한다. 부치크브스카 자매는 이러한 전통적인 제조, 장식 방식을 사용하여 현대적, 독창적인 예술 이미지의 ‘DOLL BUCHKIVSKI’라는 브랜드를 개발하였다. 각 인형에 ‘행복의 매듭’ 또는 '생명의 나무’가 있는 그녀의 창작 활동은 언론매체의 주목을 받으며 많은 전시 카탈로그에 소개되었다. 북미, 유럽, 호주, 일본, 발트 국가 등 20여 개국에 수출되고 있으며, 현대 다문화 세계에서 우크라이나의 깊고 신성한 기원에 접하는 독특한 기회로 평가된다.

그녀는 30년간의 창작 활동으로 국내외 170여 전시 행사에 참여하면서 모탄카 인형을 통해 우크라이나의 전통과 정신을 세계에 알리는 데 중요한 역할을 했다. 러시아의 우크라이나 침공 이후, 우크라이나 군 지원을 위한 자선 경매에 인형을 기부하고 적극적인 자원봉사 활동을 하며, 2023년부터는 일본에서 ‘평화를 위한 100개의 모탄카 인형’ 자선 전시회에 인형들을 전시하고 있다. 그녀의 이러한 노력과 헌신으로 우크라이나의 예술적 유산의 보존 및 발전에 크게 기여하여, 이에 국제 문화 기구 ‘World Masters Committee’로부터 “2023년 세계 마스터”라는 칭호를 수상했다.

Galyna Buchkivska and the Motanka

Galyna Buchkivska, born on October 18, 1974, in the Khmelnytskyi region of Ukraine, is known by many titles. She holds advanced degrees in primary education, technical education, higher education design, and management. A Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences and a professor, she is the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the Khmelnytskyi Humanitarian-Pedagogical Academy and a professor in the department of fine arts, decorative arts, and technology. An Honored Artist of Ukraine, she is the author of over 150 scientific papers. She has created her own scientific school centered around her scientific interests in cultural and ethnic art education, earning accolades from the Supreme Council of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education and Science, and the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine, as well as recognition from the Presidential Administration. Her membership in the National Union of Folk Art Masters and the Union of Designers has earned her the title of a shining star in Ukrainian art and education.

Galyna has her own creative activities in the techniques of artistic leather processing and the Ukrainian traditional motanka dolls. The motanka doll is a small work of art that merges the past with the present, serving as a link to ancestors and a mediator between generations. It is a craft on par with embroidered towels, weaving, ceramics, and pottery in Ukrainian culture. The motanka doll, derived from the Ukrainian word "motaty," meaning to wrap or bind with cloth without the use of needles or scissors, is considered a protector of human destiny, unable to be pierced or cut. Typically fashioned into human forms (women or children), each doll made from scraps of family members' clothing is unique and serves as a guardian protecting homes and communities with benevolent intent.

The motanka doll is distinct from typical dolls as it has a "blank" face. Ukrainian ancestors believed that giving a doll a face could bind a person's soul to it. Therefore, instead of facial features, the motanka doll's face is adorned with threads of various colors arranged in a cross pattern.

The Buchkivska sisters have developed their own brand, "DOLL BUCHKIVSKI," using traditional manufacturing, ornamentation, and decoration methods to create modern, original artistic images. Each doll features a 'knot of happiness' or 'tree of life.' Their creative work has garnered media attention and has been featured in numerous exhibition catalogs. The dolls are exported and collected in over 20 countries, including the USA, Canada, Greece, the UK, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Australia, Germany, Japan, and the Baltic states, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the deep and sacred origins of Ukrainian authenticity in the contemporary multicultural world.

For 30 years of creative activity, Galyna has participated in over 170 exhibition events of various levels, both domestic and international, playing a significant role in promoting Ukrainian tradition and spirit through the motanka dolls. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, she has been actively involved in volunteer work, continuously donating dolls to charity auctions to support the Ukrainian military, and since 2023, her dolls have been exhibited in Japan at the "100 Motanka Dolls for Peace" charity exhibition.

These her efforts and dedication have greatly contributed to the preservation and development of Ukraine’s artistic heritage, and in recognition of her work, she has been honored with another title of “World Master of 2023” by the international cultural organization “World Masters Committee.”
