Fashion and Florence have been intertwined since the 1200s and 1300s during the Renaissance period when many European nobles and royals visited Florence to purchase the finest fashion of the time. From year 1200 to 1770, the corporation known as 'Arte della seta' (the Art of Silk) was one of the seven most powerful corporations in the city. The fusion of fashion and Florence has been ongoing for centuries, culminating in the first Italian high fashion show initiated by Giovanni Battista Giorgini in Florence in February 1951, and followed by a second show in July 1951, both targeting American buyers.

Today, Florence is considered one of the world's fashion capitals, as it is the birthplace of renowned brands such as Gucci, Ferragamo, Emilio Pucci, and Cavalli. Every January, Florence hosts the first new fashion collection shows and fairs, named Pitti Uomo (man), followed by fashion events in New York, London, Milan, and Paris in February.
