[아츠앤컬쳐] 1900년대 중반 할리우드 영화계에서는 헝가리인만으로는 충분하지 않고 재능이 있어야 한다는 말이 널리 퍼져 있었다. 그러나 무성영화 시대의 개척기부터 지금까지, 헝가리 영화 제작자들은 은막의 스토리텔링 예술에 크게 기여해 왔다. 이 진술의 타당성을 입증하듯이, 헝가리인들은 할리우드 영화 산업의 창립자들 가운데 중요한 역할을 하고, 영화 역사에 그들만의 유산을 남겼다.

몇 가지 사례를 들어 보면, 아돌프 주코르는 ‘파라마운트 픽처스’를 창립하였고, 윌리엄 폭스는 오늘날 ‘20세기 폭스’로 알려진 ‘폭스 영화사’를 창립했다. 또한, 알렉산더 코르다는 그 업적을 인정받아 1942년 처칠의 추천으로 여왕에게서 기사 작위를 받았으며, 감독 마이클 커티즈도 그의 걸작 ‘카사블랑카’로 영화 역사에 영원히 이름을 남겼다. 커티즈에 관한 흥미로운 사실 하나는 할리우드 전체가 그의 프란츠슈타트(부다페스트 지역) 억양에 익숙했다는 것인데, 그의 발음으로 많은 일화가 돌았다. 한번은 그가 한 장면에서 물웅덩이(puddle)를 만들어달라고 했지만, 그 억양 때문에 대신 푸들(poodle)을 대령한 사건도 있었다고 한다.

미국으로 이주한 헝가리인 뿐만 아니라, 1918년까지 헝가리는 세계에서 다섯 번째로 큰 영화 제작 국가가 되었다. 헝가리 영화제작자들과 헝가리 영화 산업은 아카데미 상을 수상하고 세 차례나 더 노미네이트된 감독 이스트반 서보와 함께 상승세를 타며 발전했다.

새천년을 맞이하여 새 세대 감독들이 나타났다. 오늘날의 헝가리 영화계는 국제적 성공과 함께 개성있는 스타일, 다양한 주제와 장르가 펼쳐지고 있다. 라슬로 네메시 옐레시는 2016년 아카데미상 수상작 ‘사울의 아들’을 연출한 감독이고, 일디코 엔예디도 아카데미상 후보에 오른 감독으로 그녀는 ‘우리는 같은 꿈을 꾼다’로 2017년 베를린에서 황금곰상을 수상하였으며, 크리스토프 데아크 감독 또한 단편영화 ‘에브리원’으로 아카데미상을 수상한 인물로 주목을 끈다.

또 다른 흥미로운 사실은 헝가리 영화 산업이 많은 세계적인 영화 기업들을 유치하고 있다는 점이다. 유리한 환경 조건 덕분에 헝가리는 영국에 이어 유럽에서 두 번째로 큰 서비스 제작 점유율을 보유하고 있다. 영화 ‘듄’의 대부분이 헝가리 내에서 촬영되었으며, 헝가리 세트 디자이너 수산나 쉬포쉬가 제94회 아카데미 시상식에서 오스카를 수상했다.

앞으로도 헝가리 영화 산업이 지금과 같은 발전을 계속 이어나갈 것을 기대한다. 관련 서비스 제작의 증가는 헝가리의 영화 전문가들에게 세계적인 감독들로부터 지식을 얻는 특별하고 중요한 기회가 된다.

우리는 지난 10월에 제5회 헝가리 영화 축제를 개최한 바 있다. 이 행사는 리스트문화원의 주최로 서울아트시네마, 부산영화의전당에서 이스트반 서보 감독의 영화 7편을 상영하고, 서보 감독의 85번째 생일을 축하하며 그의 영화에 대한 탁월한 공헌을 기념하여 진행하였다. 오는 2024년에 열릴 제6회 헝가리영화제는 헝가리 여성 감독들의 뛰어난 작품을 상영하여 다양하고 매혹적인 재능과 창의성을 선보일 예정이다.

Hungarian Cinematography - The Impact of Hungarian Filmmakers

A common saying within the Hollywood film industry in the mid-1900s was that it is not enough to be Hungarian; one must also be talented. From the pioneering days of the silent film era to the present day, Hungarian filmmakers have contributed significantly to the art of storytelling on the silver screen.

To illustrate the validity of this statement, numerous Hungarians were among the founding figures of the Hollywood film industry, leaving a legacy in film history. Highlighting only a few examples, Adolph Zukor left a notable legacy through the founding of Paramount Pictures, and William Fox was the founder of the Fox Film Corporation, which is known today as the 20th Century Fox. Another notable person of the film industry is Alexander Korda, who was even knighted by the Queen in 1942 at Churchill's recommendation, in recognition of his outstanding achievements. Not to mention Michael Curtiz, the director of Casablanca, whose masterpiece has forever etched his name in the annals of film history. An interesting fact about Curtiz, that all of Hollywood was familiar with his Franzstadt (a district of Budapest) accent, there were lots of anecdotes circulating about his so-called curtizisms. One of the more famous anecdotes about him is when he asked for a puddle for one of the scenes, only to be given a poodle instead due to his accent.

And not only Hungarians who emigrated to America achieved success in the film industry. By 1918, Hungary had become the fifth largest film producer in the world. Hungarian filmmakers and the Hungarian film industry were on the upswing among others with the Academy Award-winning and three-time Oscar-nominated director István Szabó.

At the turn of the millennium, a new generation of filmmakers took the stage. Today's Hungarian cinema is shaped by several international successes, individual styles and diverse themes and genres.

Whether it's László Nemes Jeles, who directed the Oscar-winning film Son of Saul in 2016, or Ildikó Enyedi, another Oscar-nominated filmmaker, who won the Golden Bear Award in Berlin in 2017 for her special film On Body and Soul. Also worth highlighting is the Oscar-winning short film Everyone, directed by Kristóf Deák.

Another interesting fact is that the Hungarian film industry attracts many global film companies. Thanks to the favourable conditions, Hungary has the second largest share of service productions in Europe behind the UK. As a result, most of the film Dune was also shot in the country, with Hungarian set designer Zsuzsanna Sipos winning the Oscar at the 94th Academy Awards.

Looking ahead, we hope that the Hungarian film industry will continue its current development. The increasing prominence of related service productions is instrumental in this, providing Hungarian film professionals with an exceptional opportunity to glean knowledge from world-renowned filmmakers.

To celebrate our film heritage, the 5th Hungarian Film Days were recently held this October, showcasing seven films by the acclaimed director István Szabó in Busan and Seoul. This event, organized by the Liszt Institute in collaboration with the Seoul Art Center and the Busan Cinema Center, commemorated Szabó's 85th birthday and celebrated his outstanding contribution to cinema. Looking ahead, the 6th Hungarian Film Days in the upcoming year promise to exhibit the remarkable works of Hungarian female directors, offering a diverse and captivating display of talent and creativity for film enthusiasts.
