[아츠앤컬쳐] 중유럽 전통에서는 1월 6일 이른바 공현 축일(하나님의 계시로 성육신하신 예수 그리스도를 축하하는 기독교 축제)이 열리고 지난 호에 언급한 12월 24일부터 시작하는 크리스마스의 긴 휴가가 끝이 난다.

크리스마스 12일간의 휴가 마지막 날이 되면 크리스마스트리를 치우고 그동안 꾸며 놓았던 진저브레드로 만든 모형집 등 식용 장식물을 먹는다. 여기에 등장하는 세 왕 즉 성경 속 마태복음과 기독교 전통 속의 동방박사는 외국인으로 아기 예수 탄생에 귀중한 예물인 황금, 유향, 몰약을 바치며 경배하고 있다.

요즘에는 어린이와 청소년들이 세 명의 동방박사와 하나의 혜성을 상징하는 복장으로 꾸미고 집집마다 찾아가 노인과 어려움에 처한 사람들을 위해 자선을 구하며 멀리 떨어진 집까지도 찾아간다. 방문하는 집은 감사와 축복의 표시로 카스파르, 멜키오르, 발타사르의 세 동방박사 모양으로 장식하고 그 문에 분필로 ‘C+M+B 2020’와 같이 연도를 써넣고 축복의 강림을 기원한다.

오스트리아와 독일에서는 소위 스타 가수들(세 동방박사와 혜성 하나)이 지방 및 국가 정부 대표로 오스트리아 연방총리 및 독일 총리를 방문한다.

1300년경 조토 디 본도네가 파도바 스크로베니 예배당에 그린 프레스코화 ‘동방박사의 경배’에서는 위의 혜성과 함께 세 동방박사의 경배를 볼 수 있다. 이것이 가장 오래된 것은 아니며 첫 언급된 것으로는 6세기 것이 있다. 중유럽에서는 특별한 3 킹스 케이크가 제공되는데, 이 오렌지와 향신료로 채워진 원형 황금 과자는 왕관과 전통적인 세 가지 예물을 나타낸다.

케이크에는 전체적으로 아몬드 또는 장신구를 얹는다. 또한, 대부분의 맥주 양조장은 이 행사를 위해 특별한 맥주를 준비한다. 이른바 크리스마스 맥주(Weihnachtsbockbier)는 약 16 주간의 특별한 성숙기를 거친 강한 맥주이며, 알콜 7.1%에 원만하고 풍부한 바디감이 있는 맛이다. 요즘에는 이 맥주가 더 일찍 나오므로 맛을 보기 바란다.

중유럽에서는 각 교회와 집에서 크리스마스의 상징으로 마구간 또는 집에 예수가 탄생한 말구유를 꾸민다. 어떤 경우에는 12월 24일 밤에 제사장이 부모와 함께 있고 1월 6일에 세 동방박사가 더해진다. 어떤 ‘구유’는 크고 아름답게 장식하며 주로 나무로 조각한다. 다음 기사에는 댄스홀(ball)을 다룰 예정인데, 춤을 좋아한다면 비엔나의 댄스 행사 방문을 위해 준비해두기 바란다.

Have you heard about the 3 Kings visiting the newly born Jesus?

In the central European tradition this event is taking place on 6th of January the so called Epiphany Day (a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation - theophany - of God incarnate as Jesus Christ) and marks the end of the Christmas season and end of long Holidays, as described in the last Article starting 24th of December.

This is also the time when the Christmas tree is taken down and any edible decorations, such as gingerbread houses, are eaten as the final day of the twelve days of Christmas. The story tells, that 3 Kings, the also referred to as the (Three) Wise Men or biblical Magia, were – in the Gospel of Matthew and Christian tradition – distinguished foreigners who visited Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrhare at that time valuable presents to pay respect for the new born.

In the present days you will see children or young persons decorated in the outfit of the 3 Kings plus 1 for symbolizing the comet going from house to house and asking for charity for old and people in pain. Once the visit the house they are marking the house with the symbols of the kings Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, as a sign of gratitude and bless the house by writing the number of the year over the door in chalk which brings luck to the family “C+M+B 2020”.

Even far away houses are visited In Austria and Germany, a group of so called star singers(3 kings+1 Comet) visits the Representative of the local and country government eg:.the Austrian and German Chancellor (prime Minister) in their respective office.

Here you can see the visit of the 3 Kings together with the Comet above (Giotto di Bondone: Adorazione dei Magi, Fresko in the Cappella degli Scrovegni (Padua ) around 1305. This is not the oldest, first mentioned was in the 6th century On this occasion a special Three Kings cake will be served in the central European Area. The circular golden pastry, filled with orange and spices, represents a crown and the three traditional gifts.The cake may contain a whole almond or trinket. Furthermore, most of the beer breweries have prepared a special beer for this occasion the so call Weihnachts Bock Bier (Xmas Beer) a strong beer with special long time of maturity some about 16 Weeks and 7,1% Alcohol with round, full bodied taste. To symbolize Christmas in central Europe in the churches and at home the model of the Stable or house, the birthplace of Jesus is shown. Some of the so called Krippe in English Manger shown the new born which will be placed by the priest on 24th of December at night with his parents and on 6th of January the 3 kings are added. Some of the “Krippe” are beautiful decorated and large in size, mostly carved wood.
