GIBRALTAR, 14 MARCH 2024 - Opening in Autumn 2025, Fortress House is a new contemporary art museum that will be a major addition to the cultural landscape of Gibraltar. Situated in the heart of the historic old town and spanning 2,700 square metres, the building is undergoing refurbishment and expansion masterminded by local architecture firm Gamma Architects. Once used as an 18th-century residence for the Governor of Gibraltar, this colonial-era architectural gem is one of the last buildings of its kind in the city.

Under the leadership of Director Henry Little, Fortress House takes on the role of a cultural beacon, responding to the needs of the citizens of Gibraltar. Extending beyond its local influence, the museum will be poised to cultivate substantial cultural exchanges with neighbouring countries and institutions, fostering a spirit of collaboration and dialogue.

“Fortress House will play a pivotal role as the first of its kind in the territory, forging a new legacy for Gibraltar as a cultural destination and contributing significantly toits creative economy.” — Henry Little, Director

Collection and programming

The centrepiece of the museum’s programming is its permanent collection. Primarily comprised of contemporary art from 1970 onwards, it focuses on works addressing the individual’s relationship with society and the pressures that shape identity. It includes works by renowned artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Michael Craig-Martin, Tracey Emin, Lucian Freud, Antony Gormley, Jenny Holzer, Alex Katz, Hew Locke, Sarah Lucas, Zanele Muholi, Bruce Nauman, Shirin Neshat, Grayson Perry, Paula Rego, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith and Rebecca Warren, among others. The majority of works in the permanent collection are by women artists and Fortress House’s exhibition program will foster a more inclusive art historical narrative.

The museum will set world-class standards for curation, collection, and visitor experience by presenting its permanent collection through a dynamic programme of displays and exhibitions, with plans to work with guest curators. The rotation of displays over time ensures a comprehensive representation of the collection, introducing new perspectives and fostering ongoing conversations. Future programming includes plans for solo exhibitions, thematic surveys and collection displays loaned from other private institutions.

The museum's commitment extends beyond exhibitions to its 200 square metre arts centre Fortress Studio, equipped with facilities for art workshops, courses, and talks. This centre aims to offer a hands-on creative experience, ensuring accessibility through educational programming catering to all age groups. Collaborations with local schools, businesses and communities will form a cornerstone of the museum's outreach, providing individuals with opportunities to acquire new skills and cultivate their art-related interests.

Architecture, location & design

Fortress House’s architecture will reinvigorate the historical Georgian building through sustainable design and adaptive reuse with contemporary additions, preserving traditional features such as rhombus tiling and grand fireplaces. The museum will have multiple entrances to ensure visibility and accessibility for all.

With gallery space occupying the top three floors of the building, Fortress House will have capacity to accommodate ambitious exhibitions with space for large-scale works. Each gallery is designed with state-of-the-art conservation conditions and lighting systems, four-metre-high ceilings, and large volumes. The northwest gallery room on the first floor will especially stand out, with a dramatic double height space intended for the display of monumental installations.

The rooftop of the building will continue the displays of art throughout the building, complete with a sculpture garden and terrace. The garden will have open views of the local scenery. Additionally, the garden will also act as a connecting link to Gibraltar’s “Green Lung”, contributing to the government’s climate change strategy to produce more green spaces to reduce air pollution in the local environment.

“It is an honour to work on Fortress House, a building that plays an important role in Gibraltar’s history and culture. Being part of a practice and team that is locally rooted, it was extremely rewarding to reinvigorate a building with strong historical significance to the region, bringing it into the present as a contemporary art museum.”
