[아츠앤컬쳐] 폴란드인들이 가장 사랑하는 명절 중 하나인 크리스마스, 그리고 크리스마스 이브인 ‘비길리아’는 크리스마스 명절 중 가장 중요한 날이기도 하다. 폴란드 크리스마스는 12월 24일 시작된다. 크리스마스가 되면 폴란드인들은 가족과 함께 전통에 따라 크리스마스를 기념한다. 우리에게는 조금 생소하지만 특별한 폴란드 크리스마스 이브 ‘비길리아 Wigilia’ 전통을 소개한다.

하늘에 뜨는 첫 별 기다리기

식사를 시작하기 전, 폴란드인들은 식탁에 앉아 첫 별이 뜨기만을 기다린다. 이 전통은 동방박사들을 예수가 태어난 곳으로 안내한 ‘베들레헴의 별’에서 유래했다. 오늘날 하늘에 떠 있는 수많은 인공위성 때문에 과연 어떤 것이 진짜 별인지 구분하기란 쉽지가 않지만, 여전히 많은 폴란드 가족들은 최선을 다해 첫 번째 별을 찾는다.

‘오프와테크 Opłatek’ 나누기

‘오프와테크 opłatek’는 이스트를 넣지 않고 물과 밀가루만을 사용해 만든 일종의 웨이퍼로, 표면에는 종교와 관련된 그림이 새겨져 있다. 크리스마스 이브 만찬 전 모두에게 오프와테크를 나눠주고, 서로 덕담을 나누며 나눠 먹는다. 이 전통은 최후의 만찬에서 빵을 나눠 먹은 전통에서 시작되었다.

동물에게 말 걸기

오래된 폴란드 전설에 따르면, 예수가 탄생하던 날 구유에 함께 있었던 동물들을 위해 크리스마스 이브 하루 동안 ‘말할 수 있는’ 능력을 선사했다고 한다. 크리스마스 이브가 되면 폴란드 어린이들은 키우는 반려동물에 다가가 대답을 기대하며 한두 마디 말을 건네곤 한다.

식탁의 빈 의자

폴란드 크리스마스 식탁에는 항상 하나의 빈 의자가 마련되어 있다. 많은 폴란드인들은 크리스마스 이브 저녁, 혹시나 집에 찾아와 도움을 청할 어떤 누군가를 위해 항상 빈 의자를 하나 남겨놓는다. 

고기는 먹지 않아요

가톨릭 전통에 따라 폴란드인들은 크리스마스 이브인 비길리아에는 고기 요리와 도수가 높은 술을 먹지 않으며, 그 대신 생선 요리와 와인이 식탁 위에 오른다.

식탁보 아래의 건초

크리스마스 만찬 중, 혹시 식탁보 아래에서 건초를 발견했다면 청소를 덜 한 것이 아니니 오해는 금물이다. 식탁보 밑에 건초를 놓는 전통은 구유에서 태어난 예수의 이야기에서 유래되었다.

열두 가지 음식

전통적으로 비길리아 만찬은 12가지 음식으로 구성되는데, 이는 1년 열두 달을 의미할 뿐만 아니라, 다가오는 12개월 행운을 빌기 위함이기도 하다. 대표적인 요리로는 사워크라우트인 ‘카푸스타 키쇼나’와 버섯을 넣어 만든 폴란드 만두 ‘피에로기’, 양귀비 씨로 만든 케이크 ‘마코비에츠’가 있다.

Polish Christmas Eve Traditions

Like in most Central European countries, Christmas in Poland is a quaint and much-beloved affair. However, while Germanic traditions, like decorating trees, have spread so far as to be unsurprising, Polish customs remain delightfully distinctive. Most of the Polish Christmas celebrations take place on 24th December, and to many Poles it is one of the most significant and family-oriented dates in the calendar. Many institutions stop working earlier than usual on the day of Christmas Eve, which is usually celebrated with a family dinner at home.

Waiting for the first star to appear in the sky

Many Poles wait until the first star appears in the sky before sitting down to eat on 24th December. This tradition commemorates the Star of Bethlehem, which according to the New Testament guided the Wise Men to the birthplace of Christ. Nowadays, with so many satellites circling around the Earth and reflecting light, its sometimes tricky to adhere to this tradition, but many families do their best.

Sharing an opłatek

Opłatek is an unleavened wafer made of flour and water embossed with a religious image. Every person attending the Christmas celebration gets one and then shares pieces of it with everyone else. This is accompanied by exchanges of good wishes and occurs before sitting down to eat. This tradition is linked to the breaking of bread at the Last Supper.

Leaving one empty place at the table

Once everybody sits down at the table to taste the delicious Christmas dishes you might notice that one place is still empty. Many Poles still  leave an empty place set at the table in case a person down on luck should show up and ask for shelter. While this rarely happens nowadays, the tradition nevertheless requires that lone strangers be taken in and treated as family.

Putting hay beneath the tablecloth

If you find some hay beneath the tablecloth at a Polish Christmas Eve celebration, don’t assume your hosts did a poor job of tidying up. The hay is there on purpose, as a way of remembering that, according to the Bible, the newborn Jesus was put in a manger to rest.

Preparing 12 dishes

A traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner consists of 12 dishes. One for each month of the new year. Some claim that one should try every dish to secure good luck throughout the upcoming twelve-month period. Classic Polish Christmas dishes include, amongst others, cabbage and mushroom pierogi (dumplings) and the poppy seed cake known as makowiec.
