[아츠앤컬쳐] 콜롬비아에 위치한 섬인 산 안드레스는 유네스코에서 지정한 ‘해양생물권보호지역’이다. 산 안드레스, 프로비덴시아, 산타 카탈리나, 3개의 섬으로 구성된 보호지역은 자그마치 230km가량의 중앙아메리카 동부지역과 750km가량의 콜롬비아 북부지역에 이르며, 이는 카리브해의 10%를 차지하고 30만㎢에 달한다.

또한 산 안드레스는 2014년, 2015년, 2019년 세계 최고의 일몰, 일출 지역으로 선정되었는데, 이는 산 안드레스가 광활한 자연과 생물의 서식지뿐만 아니라 최고의 수상스포츠 휴양지임을 보여준다.

대부분의 지역은 다채로운 바다, 근사한 산호초, 그리고 풍부한 해양생물로 가득하다. 가장 많이 찾는 관광지 중엔 코코플럼(Cocoplum), 아쿠아리오(Acuario), 그리고 웨스트뷰 공원(Westview Park) 등이 있는데 모두 스쿠버다이빙과 제트스키 등의 수상스포츠 성지로 알려져 있다. 수중 아름다운 해양생물들이 반갑게 맞이하고, 자연경관도 다이버를 사로잡을 정도로 매우 아름답다.

또한, 바다나 해변뿐만 아니라 녹색의 자연경관도 눈여겨볼 만하다. 맑고 깨끗한 공기로 충만한 섬 중앙의 보타닉 가든(Botanic Garden)은 관광객과 현지인 모두를 진정시키는 일종의 산림욕장인데, 이곳에서 공룡시대의 식물과 현지 식물을 만나볼 수 있다. 또한, 산 안드레스는 영국, 스페인, 그리고 해적의 문화가 융합된 곳으로, 또 다른 명소인 해적 모건의 동굴(Pirate Morgan’s Cave)은 스페인에서 훔친 호화스러운 보물이 숨겼다는 해적의 전설이 있는 곳이다.

관광객들은 호텔, 식당, 술집, 가게 등 쇼핑거리에서 즐거운 시간을 보내며 산책로를 걷거나, 칵테일 한잔에 레게 음악을 들으면서, 미소가 넘치는 사람들과의 만남으로 시간 가는 줄 모를 것이다.

시간을 내어서 좀 더 특별한 경험을 원한다면 산 안드레스에서 접근성이 좋은 이웃 섬들의 탐방도 좋을 것이다. 조니 케이 섬(Johnny Cay Island)는 산 안드레스에서 쾌속선으로 15분 정도로 가까운 곳이다. 눈부신 모래와 진녹색의 야자수로 가득한 해변에서 섬의 현지인들이 당신을 반갑게 맞으며 달콤한 칵테일 한 잔을 선사할 것이다.

마지막으로 프로비덴시아(Providencia)와 산타 카탈리나섬(Santa Catalina)은 아름다운 경치와 풍부한 해양 자원들로 가득하기 때문에 “카리브해 서쪽 연안의 숨겨진 보석”이라고 알려져 있다. 산 안드레스에서 비행기로 20분, 쌍동선으로 3시간 항해하면 섬에 도착한다.

여기서 산타 카탈리나에 가는 방법은 ‘연인들을 위한 다리(Lovers’ Bridge / Puente de los Enamorados)’를 건너면 된다. 바다 위에 떠 있는 150m가량의 다리에는 “연인들이 함께 다리를 건너면 영원한 사랑이 이루어진다”라는 전설이 있다.

San Andres, An authentic paradise

San Andrés is the island in Colombia declared “Seaflower Biosphere Reserve” by UNESCO. The reserve contains three islands including San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina. It locates 230 kilometers of eastern mainland Central America and 750 kilometers of northern mainland Colombia, which also takes in 10% of the Caribbean Sea and cover an expanse of over 300 thousand square kilometers.

Moreover, San Andrés was chosen as the world's top Sun and Beach destination in 2014, 2015, and 2019. This means San Andrés is not only the heaven of nature and life, but also one of the best islands for watersports and leisure.

Most spots are surrounded by colourful ocean, splendid coral reefs, and rich underwater life. Landmarks like Cocoplum, Acuario, and Westview Park, are definitely for scuba diving and other watersports like jetskiing. The landscape is beautiful enough to mesmerise divers under the water and underwater life greets them friendly.

It also has green nature as well as the ocean sides. Botanic Gardens is full of fresh and pure air to relax tourists and islanders, located in the centre of the island where you can see vegetation from the dinosaur era and other native plants. In addition, San Andrés has cultural mix of English, Spanish, pirate and buccaneer, which means you can view Pirate Morgan's Cave with its legend of pirate stashing his treasure trove of riches from Spain.

Tourists will enjoy the shopping district like hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops. They will never realise time flies while walking along the promendate, driking a glass of cocktails under gentle reggae music, and meeting people full of smile.

If you want to spend more time and experience more speical, there are three more islands you can easily visit from San Andrés. You can visit Johnny Cay Island by speedboat, which takes just 15minutes. It's famous for its beaches with white sands and deep green of palm trees. The local islanders will greet you with smile and provide you delicious cocktail.

Lastly, Providencia and Santa Catalina is known as “the hidden gem of the western Caribbean” for their beauty and marine wealth. It only takes about 20 minutes to get to Providencia by plane from San Andrés, or 3 hours by catamaran. Then how do you get to Santa Catalina? You can easily cross “Lovers' Bridge”, Puente de los Enamorados on foot. The 150-meter floating structure has legend that guarantees eternal love to all couples crossing it together.
