[아츠앤컬쳐] 이탈리아 북부에 위치한 베르가모는 문화유산과 역사, 자연의 아름다움이 조화를 이루며 수많은 방문객의 마음을 사로잡는 도시다. 역사적인 치타 알타(상부 도시)와 현대적인 치타 바싸(하부 도시)로 나뉘어 있는 베르가모는 중세의 고풍스러운 정취와 현대의 우아한 감성이 멋진 대조를 이룬다. 이 두 지역은 아름다운 산책로와 낭만적인 케이블카로 연결되어 있다. 치타 알타가 과거의 분위기를 간직하고 있다면, 치타 바싸는 베르가모의 활기찬 일상이 펼쳐지는 심장부다.

오늘날 베르가모는 특히 치타 알타가 지닌 중세의 매력으로 유명하다. 자갈길과 유서 깊은 광장, 오래된 교회, 그리고 놀랄 만큼 잘 보존된 성벽이 도시의 오랜 역사를 고스란히 전해주며, 풍부한 예술 유산, 미식, 문화 전통으로도 사랑받고 있다. 또한 베르가모는 위대한 오페라 작곡가 가에타노 도니체티의 출생지로서, 음악사에서도 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 베르가모의 가장 상징적인 랜드마크 중 하나는 16세기 후반 베네치아공화국 통치 시절, 방어 목적으로 건설된 ‘베네치아 성벽’으로, 오늘날까지도 훌륭한 보존상태를 유지하고 있다.

2017년, 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정된 이 성벽에는 치타 알타의 중심부로 들어가는 주요 관문인 네 개의 기념비적인 성문이 있다. 그중 가장 중요한 문은 ‘산 자코모 문’이다. 이 상징적인 통로는 베르가모를 처음 방문하는 관광객뿐만 아니라, 고대 성벽을 따라 도시를 내려다보며 아름다움을 감상하고 사진에 담는 것을 즐기는 현지 주민들에게도 소중한 곳이다.

치타 알타에서 가장 인상적인 장소는 단연 베키아 광장이다. 중앙의 콘타리니 분수를 위시하여 팔라초 델라 라조네와 팔라초 누오보 같은 역사적 건물들이 광장을 둘러싸고 있다. 그 뒤로 우뚝 솟은 종탑의 캄파노네 종은 360년이 넘도록 매일 밤 10시에 100 번의 타종으로 도시의 시간을 알려왔다. 방문객들은 230개의 계단을 걸어 오르거나 엘리베이터를 타고 꼭대기로 올라가, 숨막힐 듯 아름다운 도시의 전경을 한눈에 담을 수 있다.

베키아 광장에 있는 팔라초 델라 라조네의 아치 아래를 지나면, 멋진 두오모광장에 이른다. 베르가모의 수호성인인 산 알렛산드로에 봉헌된 베르가모대성당이 우뚝 솟아 있는 곳이다. 바로 옆에는 화려하게 장식된 외관과 섬세한 세부 조각, 사자가 받치고 있는 독특한 입구로 유명한 웅장한 산타 마리아 마조레 대성당이 있다. 이 특별한 광장은 티모시 샬라메가 주연한 영화 <콜 미 바이 유어 네임>의 촬영지로 국제적인 명성을 얻었으며, 그 마법 같은 분위기를 느껴보기 위해 전 세계 곳곳에서 관광객들이 찾아온다.

구불구불한 골목길을 거닐다 보면 역사 속으로 흠뻑 빠져들 뿐만 아니라, 곳곳에 자리한 장인 공방들을 둘러보고 아늑한 카페나 활기찬 레스토랑에서 여유를 즐기며 여행의 아름다운 순간들로 오래 기억될 도시 풍경을 감상할 수 있다.

또한, 베르가모를 방문했다면 ‘카손첼리 알라 베르가마스카’를 맛보지 않을 수 없다. 이 요리는 베르가모 현지 미식 전통을 상징하는 진정한 아이콘이다. 속을 채워 넣은 독특한 반달 모양의 파스타로, 라비올리와 비슷하지만, 속재료에서 지역의 농경 문화와 풍부한 전통이 담긴 깊은 풍미를 느낄 수 있다. 밀라노에서 가까운 거리에 있는 베르가모는 요컨대, 결코 놓쳐서는 안 될 숨은 보석과 같은 도시라 할 것이다.

Bergamo, a hidden gem

Bergamo is a northern Italian city that captivates visitors with its unique blend of cultural heritage, history, and natural beauty. Divided into the historic Città Alta (Upper Town) and the modern Città Bassa (Lower Town), the city offers a fascinating contrast between medieval charm and contemporary elegance. These two areas are connected by scenic walking paths and a charming funicular. While Città Alta preserves the atmosphere of the past, Città Bassa represents the lively heart of Bergamo, where everyday life unfolds.

Nowadays, Bergamo is especially celebrated for the medieval charm of its Città Alta, with cobbled streets, historic squares, ancient churches, and its remarkably well-preserved city walls, as well as for its rich artistic heritage, cuisine, and cultural legacy. It also holds a special place in the world of opera as the birthplace of Gaetano Donizetti, one of the greatest opera composers. Among its most iconic landmarks stand the Venetian Walls of Bergamo, built in the second half of the 16^th century for defensive purposes, at a time when the city was under the rule of the Republic of Venice, and still preserved in excellent condition today.

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017, the Walls remain the main access point to the heart of Città Alta through four ancient monumental gates, the most important of which is Porta di San Giacomo. This iconic passage is cherished not only by tourists discovering Bergamo for the first time, but also by locals, who enjoy walking along the ancient walls to admire the city from above and capture its beauty in photographs.

One of the most iconic spots in Città Alta is Piazza Vecchia. It is surrounded by historic buildings such as Palazzo della Ragione and Palazzo Nuovo, and centred around the Contarini Fountain. Rising above it all is the Campanone, which has marked 10 p.m. with 100 tolls every evening for more than 360 years. Visitors can climb the 230 steps or take a lift to the top to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the city.

Passing through the arches of Palazzo della Ragione in Piazza Vecchia, you reach the enchanting Piazza Duomo, dominated by Bergamo’s cathedral, the Duomo, dedicated to Sant’Alessandro, the city’s patron saint. Just steps away stands the magnificent Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, famous for its richly decorated exterior, sculptural details, and lion-supported entrances. This extraordinary square also gained international fame as the setting of a scene from the film “Call Me by Your Name”, starring Timothée Chalamet, drawing visitors from all over the world who come to relive its magic.

As you wander through the winding narrow streets, you’ll not only be immersed in history, but you’ll also have the chance to browse charming artisan boutiques, relax in lively cafés and restaurants, and take in unforgettable views.

When it comes to food, you simply can’t visit Bergamo without tasting the Casoncelli alla Bergamasca. This iconic dish is a true symbol of the culinary tradition of the Bergamo area. It consists of fresh stuffed pasta with a distinctive half-moon shape, similar to ravioli, but with a filling that reflects the region’s rural roots and rich local heritage.

Just a short trip from Milan, Bergamo is a true hidden gem that you shouldn’t miss.
