[아츠앤컬쳐] 크로아티아의 소도시 카브타트(Cavtat)가 최근 유럽 베스트 데스티네이션(European Best Destinations)으로부터 ‘2026년 유럽에서 가장 아름다운 해안 도시’로 선정되었다. 200곳이 넘는 유럽 해안 도시를 대상으로 한 엄격한 평가를 거쳐 선정된 카브타트는 건축적 조화, 풍부한 문화유산, 여유로운 지중해식 삶의 방식, 그리고 뛰어난 해안 경관으로 전문가와 관광객 모두에게 깊은 인상을 남겼다.

카브타트는 크로아티아 남부 아드리아해 연안의 코나블레(Konavle) 지역에 위치해 있으며, 두브로브니크에서 남쪽으로 약 15km 떨어져 있다. 아드리아해에 둘러싸인 작은 반도 위에 자리한 이 도시는 자연적으로 보호된 지형 덕분에 맑고 투명한 바다와 울창한 지중해 식생을 자랑한다. 또한 두브로브니크 국제공항과 가까워 크로아티아에서 가장 접근성이 뛰어난 해안 도시 중 하나로 평가받고 있다.

카브타트의 역사는 2천 년이 넘는다. 기원전 6세기, 그리스인들에 의해 ‘에피다우로스(Epidaurus)’라는 이름으로 건설된 이 도시는 이후 로마 시대의 중요한 거점으로 발전했다. 중세 초기 파괴된 이후 주민들은 두브로브니크 건설에 기여했으며, 카브타트는 점차 재건되어 ‘라구사 베키아(Ragusa Vecchia, 옛 도시)’로 불리게 되었다. 오늘날의 지명인 카브타트는 ‘고대 도시’를 뜻하는 라틴어 키비타스 베투스(Civitas Vetus)에서 유래한 것으로, 이 지역의 깊은 역사적 뿌리와 지속성을 상징한다.

작은 도시임에도 불구하고 카브타트의 문화유산은 매우 풍부하다. 대표적인 명소인 부코바츠 하우스(Bukovac House)는 크로아티아 근대 회화를 대표하는 화가 블라호 부코바츠(Vlaho Bukovac)의 생가이자 박물관으로, 그의 옛 집과 작업실, 원본 벽화를 통해 크로아티아와 유럽 미술계를 잇는 예술가의 삶과 작품 세계를 살펴볼 수 있다.

도시 위쪽 라트(Rat) 반도에는 20세기 초 크로아티아를 대표하는 조각가 이반 메슈트로비치(Ivan Meštrović)가 설계한 라치치 가문 영묘(Račić Family Mausoleum)가 자리하고 있다. 브라치(Brač) 섬에서 채석한 순백의 석재로 건축된 이 영묘는 아드리아해를 내려다보는 위치에 있으며, 깊은 영적 상징성과 함께 뛰어난 조형미를 갖춘 건축·조각 작품으로 평가받고 있다. 메슈트로비치는 크로아티아 현대 조각을 대표하는 인물로, 프랑스의 조각가 오귀스트 로댕은 그를 두고 “조각가들 가운데 가장 위대한 현상이며, 나보다 더 위대한 조각가”라고 평가한 바 있다.

15세기로 거슬러 올라가는 성 니콜라스 교회(Church of St Nicholas)는 정교한 목조 제단으로 잘 알려져 있다. 성소 인근에는 부코바츠가 그린 네 명의 복음서 저자 초상화가 있으며, 교회 내부 벽면에는 19세기 화가 카르멜로 레지(Carmelo Reggi)의 제단화와 함께 십자가의 길이 장식돼 있다.

1484년에 설립된 눈의 성모 프란치스코 수도원(Our Lady of the Snow Franciscan Monastery)에는 초기 르네상스 시대의 회화 작품과 더불어, 해질 무렵의 카브타트를 내려다보는 성모자상을 묘사한 부코바츠의 인상적인 대형 회화가 소장돼 있다. 이 수도원의 회랑에서는 정기적으로 음악회가 개최되고 있다.

카브타트는 매년 6월부터 9월까지 야외 음악, 무용, 거리 공연 등 다양한 문화 행사를 개최하며, 7월 초에는 이틀간의 여름 카니발이 열린다. 또한 9월에는 전통 클라파(Klapa) 합창 페스티벌과 함께 음악 공연으로 시즌을 마무리하는 에피다우로스(Epidaurus) 페스티벌이 열린다.

카브타트의 국제적 위상은 포브스(Forbes)가 이 도시를 2,000곳이 넘는 해안 휴양지 가운데 ‘2026년 유럽 최고의 해안 휴양지 15선’ 중 하나로 선정하면서 더욱 높아졌다. 포브스는 카브타트의 여유로운 아드리아해의 매력, 뛰어난 자연경관, 그리고 편리한 접근성을 주요 선정 이유로 꼽았다.

카브타트가 유럽 최고의 해안 도시로 평가받는 이유는 아름다운 명소와 자연환경뿐만 아니라, 따뜻하고 친절한 지역 주민들이 만들어가는 삶의 방식에 있다. 이곳의 일상은 아침 바다 수영, 야자수가 늘어선 산책로를 따라 걷는 여유로운 산책, 그리고 바다 곁에서 이어지는 긴 저녁 시간으로 채워진다. 방문객들은 현지 주민들로부터 마치 하나의 큰 가족처럼 환영받으며, 진정한 지중해식 삶의 여유를 경험할 수 있다.

Cavtat: Europe’s Most Beautiful Coastal Town for 2026

Cavtat, a small Croatian town has recently been named Europe’s most beautiful coastal town for 2026 by European Best Destinations. Selected from more than 200 carefully evaluated coastal locations, Cavtat impressed experts and tourists alike with its architectural harmony, cultural heritage, relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle, and exceptional coastal scenery.

Cavtat is situated on Croatia’s southern Adriatic coast, just 15 kilometres south of Dubrovnik, in the Konavle region. Set on a small peninsula embraced by the Adriatic Sea, the town enjoys a naturally sheltered position with crystal-clear waters and lush Mediterranean vegetation. Its proximity to Dubrovnik Airport makes it one of the most accessible coastal destinations in Croatia.

The story of Cavtat stretches back more than two millennia. Originally founded by Greek settlers as Epidaurus in the 6th century BC, the settlement later became an important Roman centre. After its destruction in the early Middle Ages, inhabitants helped establish Dubrovnik, while Cavtat was gradually rebuilt and became known as Ragusa Vecchia, or the “Old City.” Today, the town’s name derives from Civitas Vetus, a reminder of its ancient roots and enduring continuity.

Cavtat’s cultural heritage is remarkably rich for a town of its size. One of its most treasured sites is the Bukovac House, birthplace and museum of Vlaho Bukovac, a leading figure of Croatian modern painting. Visitors can explore his former home, studio, and original wall paintings, gaining insight into the life of an artist whose work bridged Croatian and European art scenes.

Above the town, on the Rat Peninsula, stands the Račić Family Mausoleum, an architectural and sculptural masterpiece designed by Ivan Meštrović in the early 20th century. Built from pristine white stone from the island of Brac, and overlooking the Adriatic, it combines spiritual symbolism with breathtaking views. Mestrovic was the most prominent modern Croatian sculptor, for whom Auguste Rodin, once said that Meštrović is the greatest phenomenon among sculptors and even greater sculptor than he was.

The Church of St Nicholas, dating back to the 15th century, is distinguished by its impressive wooden altars. Near the sanctuary are paintings of the four Evangelists by the renowned local artist Vlaho Bukovac, alongside a striking 19^th century altarpiece by Carmelo Reggi, with the Stations of the Cross lining the church walls.

Founded in 1484, the Our Lady of the Snow Franciscan Monastery in Cavtat features a church with notable early Renaissance paintings and a striking canvas by Vlaho Bukovac depicting the Madonna and Child gazing over Cavtat at dusk. Concerts are regularly held in the church cloisters.

During the summer months, from June through September, Cavtat offers a rich programme of cultural events, with open-air music, dance, and street performances animating the town, complemented by a two-day Summer Carnival in early July. September is marked by traditional klapa singing festivals as well as the Epidaurus Festival, which rounds out the season with a series of music performances.

Cavtat’s rising international profile was further confirmed when Forbes named it one of the Top 15 Unforgettable Coastal Getaways in Europe for 2026, selecting it from more than 2,000 seaside destinations for its relaxed Adriatic charm, scenic beauty, and easy access.

What makes Cavtat Europe’s best coastal town is not only its landmarks and natural beauty, but also its atmosphere and way of life shaped by the warmth and hospitality of its local people. Life here flows at a gentle pace, marked by morning swims, shaded walks along the palm-lined promenade, and long evenings by the sea, where visitors are welcomed as part of one big local family.
