[아츠앤컬쳐] 돌로미티의 진주라고 불리는 코르티나담페초는 베네치아에서 자동차로 약 2시간 거리에 바위산의 한가운데에 자리잡고 있다. 신이 자신의 가장 세련된 창조물 중 하나로 만들었다고 일컬어지며, 2009년 이후 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등재되었다.

고운 암페차나 계곡에 1800년대 중반에 철도가 놓인 후로는 부유한 외국인 관광객들, 앵글로색슨인, 독일인, 러시아인들이 이 작은 마을 코르티나를 찾아 바위 봉우리들을 찾거나 등반하는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 유명한 알파인 가이드, 전문 산악인들은 부유한 유럽 신사와 숙녀들이 이 아름다운 곳을 찾아오도록 만들었고, 코르티나는 점점 더 국제적인 엘리트들을 위한 중요한 관광 명소가 되었다.

1956년 동계올림픽과 함께 코르티나는 세계 스포츠의 중심도시 중 하나가 되었다. 올림픽 이후 수십 년 동안, 오늘날까지 코르티나는 활강, 스노보드, 점프 등 겨울 스포츠 분야에서 많은 월드컵 대회를 개최해왔고, 2026년에도 또 다시 동계 올림픽 개최지로 예정되어 있다. 또한, 1981년 로저 무어의 007 영화 ‘For your eyes only’나 1992년 실베스터 스탤론의 영화 ‘클리프행어’ 등의 촬영과, 어니스트 헤밍웨이, 조지 클루니, 나오미 캠벨 등 전 세계의 VIP들을 맞이해왔다.

우리는 지인 중에 코르티나에서 태어나 살며 현재도 거주하고 있는 시스토 씨를 만나보았다. 시스토 씨에게 맨처음 어떻게 이 작은 산골 마을이 산림 개발과 목재업에서 벗어나 세계에서 가장 우아하고 독점적인 장소로 발전될 수 있었나 하고 물었다. “우리를 이 경지에 이르게 한 것은 인간과 자연 사이의 1,000년 이상의 신중한 관계입니다. 여기서 우리는 이 두 힘 사이에 완벽한 조화를 만들기 위해 세심하게 작업해왔지요. 어떤 것도 운에 맡기지 않았고 수십 년 동안 우리는 인간의 작품이 미적 파노라마 관점과 기능적, 운영적 측면 모두에서 인상적이고 특징적인 자연에 완벽하게 들어맞는 관계에 도달했습니다.”

계속하여 시스토 씨에게 코르티나를 방문하기에 가장 좋은 계절이 언제인지 물어보았다. 시스토 씨는,

“코르티나는 일년 내내 흥미롭고, 아름답습니다. 겨울은 많은 국제 대회가 열리고 눈은 모든 것이 극도로 아름다워지는 동화 같은 풍경을 만들어 주지요. 완벽하게 관리되고 서로 연결된 수십km의 스키장으로 많은 사람들이 스키를 타러 옵니다. 여름에는 짙푸른 하늘과 대조적으로 전형적인 강렬한 녹색으로 채워진답니다. 이 기간에는 코르티나부터 가장 높은 2,752m의 라가조이 대피소까지 수많은 대피소에 골프 선수, 암벽 전문가, 산악인이 상주합니다. 봄에는 자연이 다시 태어나는 풍경 속에서 오랜 산책을 하며 이 우아한 장소만의 독점적인 즐거움을 누릴 수 있습니다. 이곳에서는 유서 깊고 우아한 5성급 호텔의 손님이 된 듯 좋은 B&B를 찾을 수 있어요. 그리고 가을에는 이곳의 지질학적 특징으로, 일출의 부드러운 분홍색과 낮의 푸른 회색의 대비, 또 일몰의 오렌지색에 이르기까지, 하루에도 몇 번씩 변하는 바위벽을 감상하고 전형적인 가을숲에 싸여 풍요로워진답니다.”

인터뷰한 시스토 씨에게 감사하며, 모두가 이 탄복할 만한 풍광을 즐기게 되기를 바란다.

Cortina d'Ampezzo

Cortina d'Ampezzo, also defined: the pearl of the Dolomites, a place nestled in the middle of the only unmistakable rocky mountains located about 2 hours by car from Venice and a UNESCO protected heritage since 2009. A place where it can easily be said that the Supreme Creator expressed himself in one of his most refined creations.

In this soft Ampezzana valley, lies the small town of Cortina, which in the past decades and since the mid 1800s thanks to the railway that reached here, has been able to attract wealthy foreign tourists, Anglo-Saxons, Germans, Russians who wanted to be able to climb and discover those rocky peaks surrounding Cortina. From the mid 1800s the famous alpine guides, expert mountain professionals, became the ones who led wealthy European gentlemen and ladies to climb and discover the beauties offered by these mountains. Thus Cortina became more and more an important place of tourism for the international elite.

In 1956 with the Winter Olympic Games, Cortina also became one of the world capitals of sport. In the decades that followed the Olympics, until today, Cortina has hosted many World Cup competitions in many winter sports disciplines, downhill, snowboarding, jumping.

All of this is already projected into the future when in 2026 Cortina will once again host the Winter Olympics. From Roger Moore in 1981 to shoot scenes for the 007 film 'For your eyes only', to Sylvester Stallone, who came to Cortina in 1992 to shoot the film 'Cliffhanger', Cortina has hosted and hosts VIPs from all over the world, from Ernest Hemingway, George Clooney, Naomi Campbell and many others.

After this brief presentation of Cortina d'Ampezzo and the spectacular mountains that surround it, we decided to interview one of our acquaintances, Mr. Sisto, born, lived and currently resident in Cortina, thus trying to enter more deeply into the culture and spirit of this place and of the people who have made and are making all this possible.

Our first question to Mr. Sisto is: How was the evolution of this small mountain town possible, thus passing from a place of mountaineers engaged in the exploitation of forests and in the timber trade, to become one of the most elegant and exclusive places in the world? "what has brought us to this, are more than 1000 years of a carefully regulated relationship between man's work and nature. Here we have done an attentive job to create a perfect harmony between these two ' forces'. Nothing is left to chance and over the decades we have step by step, reached that relationship where the work of man fits perfectly into the surrounding impressive and characteristic nature, both from an aesthetic panoramic point of view and also from a functional and operational aspect."

Continuing our conversation, we ask Sisto to advise us, what would be the best season to visit Cortina?

"All four seasons have their own strong identity and in Cortina it is always possible to do something interesting and meet beautiful people throughout the year. Winter hosts many international competitions and the snow helps to create fairy-tale landscapes, where everything becomes extremely beautiful. Without forgetting that many visitors come to ski on the tens of kilometers of ski fields, perfectly maintained and connected to each other. In Summer, everything changes and becomes full of those typical intense green colors in contrast with the deep blue sky. In this period, Cortina hosts golf players, walkers, rock experts and walkers who can reach the many refuges at high altitude, up to the Lagazuoi refuge located at 2752 meters, the highest in the Cortina area. In Spring, Cortina offers a landscape where everything flourishes, where nature is reborn, where visitors can take long walks and enjoy all those elegant places that this location offers, from exclusive pleasures, pastry shops, auctions of important works of art. Here in Cortina you can find good B&Bs, just as you can be guests in historic and elegant five-star hotels. And in Autumn, Cortina is enriched by those typical colors of the autumn forests that mix with the colors of the rocky mountain walls that have the characteristic of changing color depending on the time of the day, from the soft pink of sun rise, to the contrast of blue grays of the day, to the orange hues of the sunset, all thanks to their geological composition."
