베스키드 산맥을 배경으로 웅장한 풍경과 한 폭의 그림 같은 스카바강 골짜기에 있는 바도비체 마을은 성 요한 바오로 2세(본명: 카롤 보이티와)의 고향이다.
마을에서 가장 유명한 관광지는 당연히 ‘요한 바오로 2세 교황 생가 박물관’으로 그의 생애를 단계별로 보여주는 대형 멀티미디어 전시를 볼 수 있다. 보이티와 가족이 생전에 살던 실제 아파트 역시 수많은 개인 소지품을 소장한 박물관이 되어 있다.
다음으로 방문해야 할 곳인 ‘소(小) 바실리카’는 바도비체에서 가장 오래된 성당이자 요한 바오로2세 교황이 세례를 받고 첫 영성체와 견진 성사를 받은 장소다. ‘카롤 보이티와 풋 트레일’은 그의 어린 시절과 사춘기와 관련이 있는 13곳의 발자취를 따라 이어진다.
바도비체는 혼잡함에서 벗어나 휴식이 필요한 관광객에게 완벽한 여행지다. 폴란드 전통 음식 외에도 이탈리아 레스토랑이나 스시 바 등이 늘어선 예쁘장한 광장의 매력을 느낄 수 있다. ‘교황의 크림 케이크’도 꼭 먹어봐야 하는데, 바닐라 크림이 채워진 프랑스식 퍼프 페스트리로 교황이 가장 좋아했던 디저트다.
바도비체를 방문한다면 마을의 녹지에도 발을 들여보자. 어린이 놀이터가 있는 아름다운 공원, 야외 체육관, 암벽 등반 벽, 테니스 코트, 스카바 리버 대로 등이 있다. 스카바 리버 대로에는 놀이터, 모래 해변, 배구 코트, 카누 대여 시설이 구비되어 있어 누구나 즐길 수 있다. 마을을 둘러볼 수 있는 여러 산책로와 자전거 코스를 선택해서 베스키드 산맥과 다양한 유적지, 자연 관광 명소를 아우르는 경치를 감상할 수 있다.

Wadowice – where it all began…
The town, scenically located with a backdrop of Beskid Mountains, in a picturesque valley of Skawa River, is the birthplace of Karol Wojtyła – the Saint John Paul II.
The greatest tourist attraction in undoubtedly the Holy Father John Paul II Family Home Museum with a large multimedia exposition representing different stages of life of the Saint. The Wojtyła Family’s original apartment, with numerous personal belongings, is the heart of the Museum.
The next step of your visit should be the Minor Basilica which is the oldest church in Wadowice and the place of Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation of the Saint. Karol Wojtyła’s Foot Trail leads through 13 places connected with his childhood and adolescence.
Wadowice is a perfect destination for tourist who need to relax away from the hustle and bustle. You can fall in love with our lovely main square where you will not only try our traditional Polish food but you may also visit some Italian restaurants and a sushi bar. You definitely need to taste the papal cream cake - a dessert made from French puff pastry and vanilla cream filling, the favourite Pope’s dessert.
When visiting Wadowice, you should also spend some time in the town’s green areas: a lovely park with children playgrounds, outdoor gyms, climbing walls and tennis courts, or the Skawa River Boulevards – a friendly space for everyone with its playgrounds, sandy beach volleyball courts and canoe rental. You may also choose from various foot and bike trails around the town – with gorgeous panoramic views of Beskid Mountains, numerous historical sites and natural attractions.
